Jim Moreno tackles the difficult task of roleplaying a merchant in this edition of RoleCraft: "Even roleplayers are known to struggle with this cookie cutter gameplay, and with keeping their characters from looking and acting just like every other character in game. What to do? One sure way to avoid the pitfalls of routine is to realize that there are many other classes in game besides adventurer. It's time to become a professional roleplayer!"

Massively has posted a beginner's guide to crafting for Mythos. Admittedly, this will be handy as the crafting system is detailed.

Crafting itself is simple to pick up -- just hit R and spend points in the crafting tree. You'll see that it is impossible for a single crafter to become an expert in more than one or two skills. The skill trees themselves are oddly split -- training in Swords and Axes gives you no abilities to create Spears and Polearms. Master the crafting of chest armors, but that will do you no good when it comes to making shoulders and helms. Focus on becoming the best cobbler in Uld, but don't expect that skill to carry over into the scribing of Heraldries.

Players can get a look at all the crafting quests and see a few more details about the nuts and bolts of crating at the link above.

JR Sutich has one final report from his recent trip, we affectionately call "angry man goes to Washington". This time, it is a more general preview of Warhammer Online, largely based on what they showed and his own hands on experiences with the game. Topics include Capital Cities, crafting Realm vs. Realm and more.

Realm vs. realm conflict is an integral parts of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. During my visit, I was able to experience the ultimate goal of RvR and capture an opposing capital city. Defeating journalists from other websites in PvP combat was just a bonus.

The battle for the Order capital of Altdorf started in a military district of the city with players from both sides fighting over six control points. I played as a geared-up, leveled-up Chaos Chosen with a two-hand sword to maximize damage. When the battle started, I noticed an enemy player with a name that had been used the day before during our play session, so I knew someone in the room was playing. My suspicions were confirmed when I hit them for about a third of their health in one shot and the person to my immediate left exclaimed, "Oh my god!" Good times. While the rest of my team captured the control points, I managed to kill my hapless victim four more times.

Fallen Earth's Question of the Week is out and it's all serious business, like the burning question if the game will have pink ponies with rainbow manes. Yes, it's business as usual here, with a promised PvP report for next Wednesday and much more:

Some of the reports from GDC are starting to trickle in, like the front page story on MMORPG.com today. We should see a few more of those on other sites over the next few weeks. We're in the process of figuring out the rest of our convention schedule for the year, but it looks like we should be making at least one trip to the western United States this summer and at least one convention abroad. We don't have all the dates locked in yet, but when we do we'll let everyone know.

We're having our long-awaited PvP battle and report on Wednesday, so that should be written up for next week's Question of the Week. We're spending a good part of this week tuning up weapons, armor, and mutations for that battle to make sure everything plays properly.

We appreciate the discussion that got started up last week after we mentioned our current debates on cars. We're interested in what folks have to say about the topics we're discussing internally, so it's nice to see people throwing ideas around in one space that is easily read...

You may be just one virtual citizen in a virtual society, but your actions can have a lasting impact on the experience of other players. Even after you log off indefinitely, your crafted gear may help turn the tide in a heated battle. Perhaps a tactic you pioneered has been passed down from haxx0r to newbie. You may have even formed a guild of like-minded individuals that has climbed the server ranks after your departure.

For this week's Newsletter Discussion, we want to know:

Has one of your creations in an MMO ever outlasted your interest in the game?

Sony Online Entertainment has taken some time to discuss the crafting sphere in Vanguard. This sphere of gameplay is rather important within the game world, so this should be a useful read to many Vanguard players - more so those who are newer to the game.

Some of the most marvelous objects in Vanguard are created by players. From the very beginning of your experience in Telon, you're exposed to a variety of meticulously crafted items, ranging from boats and envy invoking armor sets, to grandiose Guild Halls and homes decorated with creativity and care.

This week's Fallen Earth questions dealt with faction contacts, mutation paths, skills, crafting, PvP loot and a promise to release more footage and information from the upcoming GDC event in February 18-22 at San Francisco:

This week we're finishing up Kaibab Forest, starting some polish work on the Plateau, giving the tutorial another pass-through (needs more explosions), and starting the process of getting ready for GDC. We're going to be at GDC doing interviews and such, so there should be a good amount of footage and information coming out of it.

I'm hoping to schedule our PvP battle for this week or next; currently our front end is going through some major revisions and I'd rather wait to do it after the revisions since that will give us an excellent chance to test out the new systems. We've been putting some work into making 3rd person combat more fun and making mutations more intuitive to use, so it should be interesting to see how things turn out...

Moonshadow delivered the Questions of the Week a bit early this week, but who is to complaint! This week we get the lowdown on the crafting system, combat slots, effects of carrying items and game sounds:

To give y'all an idea of where things stand in terms of progress on Fallen Earth: currently there are around seventy towns or major encounter areas that have been laid out with around fifty that are functionally complete in terms of content (not polished, mind you, just functional); there are currently almost three thousand missions implemented; and our database has around seventy-five hundred items. We've gotten a lot done, but we still have a lot left to do. This is a deadline week for us, so things are bit more hectic than normal. This week we're working on New Flagstaff, Thorne's Bluff, Last Stop, Dieseltown, Docuer's Court, and Aesterly.

1. I assume that making items near your level to earn XP and skillups means the items need to be near your crafting level, not character level, since that would lead to problems like out-leveling your crafting, etc.

Actually the experience points gained through crafting are based on the level of the item produced compared to your character level. High level characters don't get anything for making low level items. Thus players are encouraged to work continually on keeping their tradeskills up, and high level players can't get free experience points by making cheap low level items.
