Scientist rediscovers rare plant unseen since 1985

A scientist with the Missouri Botanical Garden has rediscovered and identified a rare parasitic plant that hasn't been seen by botanists in more than 20 years.
A single specimen of the plant was found in Mexico in 1985, but the plant wasn't seen again until St. Louis botanist George Yatskievych and a colleague found it in a pine oak forest in Mexico's mountains.
The plant, which he is identifying and naming for the first time, is not a classic beauty. The odd, orange-brown, fleshy-stemmed plant _ which will have the formal Latin name for the 'little hermit of Mexico' _ has a pine cone-shaped dense cluster of flowers and juicy celery-like stalks. Read more

Bud the cat OK after being stuck in drain pipe for 4 days
Bud the cat is back home safe and sound after spending more than four days stuck in a drain pipe in his family's yard in Harrisburg.
Linda Grudi said Bud disappeared a week ago and the family searched high and low for him, nearly giving up hope.
Then, on Saturday morning, as she was gardening, Grudi heard a faint 'meow.' Neighbors, a contractor, a plumber and the fire department resumed the search.
Finally, Dave Jones of Roto-Rooter was summoned and he and his team dropped a fiber-optic camera about 100 feet into a 6-inch drain pipe and there was Bud, staring back at them. Read more
