Source: lawmakers to get video evidence on Syrian facility

U.S. intelligence officials will show members of Congress a videotape laying out the evidence that Syria was building a nuclear reactor with North Korean assistance before it was bombed by Israeli planes in September 2007, a U.S. official said Wednesday.

Intelligence officials who have seen the evidence consider it 'extremely compelling,' the U.S. official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity of the sensitive nature of the information.

The Syrian reactor was similar in design to a North Korean reactor that has in the past produced small amounts of plutonium. It was not yet complete but was far enough along to demonstrate a resemblance to the North Korean reactor at Yonbyon. Read more

China Hails Reform of Death Penalty

“It's a step in the right direction, but we still have a long way to go”

Only 'extremely vile criminals' were executed in China last year, the country's top judge said Monday, declaring success in efforts to reform the much criticized legal system.

Rights groups say China executes more people annually than the rest of the world combined. But the number executions dropped last year due to new legislation to reserve the death penalty for only the most severe cases.

Death sentences were handed down only for an 'extremely small number of extremely serious and extremely vile criminals posing a grievous threat to society,' said Xiao Yang, chief justice of the Supreme People's Court. Read more

Rice Wins Chinese Help on NKorea Nukes

“It's a long way from playing that concert to changing the nature of the politics of North Korea”

A fire and explosions ripped through a nearly completed cold storage warehouse south of Seoul on Monday, killing 40 workers. Most of the victims were so badly burned they could not immediately be identified.

All the dead were discovered in the warehouse basement, where workers were injecting urethane foam into the walls when the fire broke out, said Kim Jung-geun, a local fire official in Icheon about 50 miles south of the capital.
