Calif. Supreme Court overturns gay-marriage ban

The California Supreme Court ruled today that same-sex couples should be permitted to marry, rejecting state marriage laws as discriminatory.

The state high court's ruling was unlikely to end the debate over gay matrimony in California. A group has circulated petitions for a November ballot initiative that would amend the state Constitution to block same-sex marriage, and the Legislature has twice passed bills to authorize gay marriage. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed both.

Minor setback. We'll ban gay marriage ONCE AGAIN in November. This was a ridiculous decision.

WOOO HOO!!! GREAT! Everyone should be able to marry who they want, legal age of course. Maybe there will be less divorce now.

From the decision:

"the constitutionally based right to marry properly must be understood to encompass the core set of basic *substantive* legal rights and attributes traditionally associated with marriage that are so integral to an individual’s liberty and personal autonomy that they may not be eliminated or abrogated by the Legislature or by the electorate through the statutory initiative process."

Well phrased!

Ammending the constitution with discrimination would also be illegal.

Vince- WHY does it matter if gay people are able to marry one-another? What possible reason, other than fear and hate, could you have for denying ANYBODY the right to marry who they wish? Shame on you!

Read the decision - the California Supreme Court has said that any ban on same-sex marriage will be completely invalid.

It's okay...in fact, you wont even notice anything different in YOUR life. Mind your own business and let the gays mind theirs.

I am confused about why people are so against gay marraige. If people are angry about gay marraige because of religious reasons, then why is it still ok to hop to vegas and have a quicky wedding to someone you met 5 minutes ago? it just doesnt make sense. the playing field needs to be evened out for all humankind. why do some people have more rights thatn others?

i think the bottom line is that someday this will all seem like a ridiculous waste of time. years ago black people were not considered equals, and today that is considered a silly notion. some day we will think the same way about homosexuality.

Excellent ruling on the part of the California Supreme Court. The Christian wackos just need to be sent to Texas where they can have their own nation. The rest of us are sick and tired of their hatred.

under the current constituation that is true. If a constitutional amendment is passed the courts can do nothing. I hope it doesnt get to that point
