Gameboy Advance games Review

30 May 2008

There are still plenty of games available for anyone not yet ready to give up on their trusty Gameboy Advance. Sigma Star Saga is one of Namco's titles for the handheld console, which is set in a futuristic war zone. The player assumes the role of Ian Recker, who must take on the parasitic alien race known as the Krill, a species attempting to wipe humanity from the galaxy completely. A total of six different worlds are available across which Recker must uncover the secrets necessary to secure victory for the beleaguered Allied Earth Federation - the six worlds marked in an intercepted Krill communication as being critical to their battle plans.

Dead to Rights, also from Namco, puts the player in control of Jack Slate, a police officer whose only friend is his canine partner Shadow. The story begins with Slate framed for a crime committed by someone else and coming to terms with his father's mysterious death. He is forced to become a fugitive as criminals and cops both hunt him down, left to rely on the few people he may be able to trust. Despite this, the player must also ensure they bring the city's criminals to justice while watching their own back.

Anyone who enjoyed playing Klonoa might find the sequel to be just as much fun. Klonoa 2 presents the player with five different worlds to navigate, each of which comes with a special hoverboard race to provide the chance to collect some special bonus gems. The side-scroller poses puzzles to the player as they progress through the story, with switches and boxes, springs and bombs, all of which must be used correctly in order to complete each level and move on to the next stage of the game - all the while nearing the conclusion of the adventure.

Xerox unveils iGen4

30 May 2008

For a professional printing solution, the Xerox iGen4 could be ideal to suit many needs.

The device promises unparalleled productivity by automating many of the features which typically require operator intervention.

By reducing the amount of time during which the printer cannot be used to produce an image, Xerox claims to boost productivity by between 25 and 35 per cent.

Anne Mulcahy, Xerox chair and chief executive officer, says: "This next-generation iGen4 delivers colour quality and automation that redefine the standards of printing.

"It's the innovation this industry expects from Xerox - technology that makes print providers more profitable."

The company adds that the Xerox iGen4 is well suited to meeting the needs of producers of short-run publications such as brochures, direct mail advertisements and books.

Xerox has also recently unveiled a new kind of ink at print industry conference drupa in Dusseldorf, Germany.

The cured gel ink is capable of printing directly on to foil or plastic - extending the abilities of many commercial printers, Xerox notes.

'Ultra lightweight' notebook launched by 3K

30 May 2008

Computer systems manufacturer 3K has launched a new notebook described as "ultra lightweight".

The compact computer measures in at a fairly diminutive seven-inch diagonal screen size.

But a number of features are incorporated which could see the RazorBook 400 battling with the big boys.

A fanless processor means no annoying whirring sounds - in fact, 3K asserts that the RazorBook 400 is "completely quiet".

Power usage is also cut down by eliminating the need for a fan, ideal when running from a battery.

Despite its compact size, the notebook is equipped with a full-scale keyboard, so there should be no fiddling with intricate key combinations to get to standard functions.

Earlier in the year, 3K announced the release of the racecar-inspired Approxima 500WS workstation.

Mesh side panels, streamlined air vents and genuine automobile paint helped to enhance the car theme of the system, while aerodynamics were used to create an efficient throughflow of cool air in order to carry heat away from components.

PSP games Review

29 May 2008

Agetec rather ominously promises that "evil is never very far away" in its new game, Fading Shadows. Due for an early summer release on the PSP handheld games console, the title places the player in control of a light beam with which to guide an orb through dangerous territory. These spread across swamps, dungeons, mountains and rivers, as well as incorporating puzzles and traps to add an extra element of difficulty. Producer Mark Johnson says: "It's an incredible, one-of-a-kind game that features an intriguing story, brain teasing puzzles and unique gameplay."

Meanwhile, Sony has unveiled a new bonus pack which might be ideal for anyone looking to get their hands on Madden NFL 09 for the PSP. The new package comes with the game, a 1 GB Memory Stick Pro Duo memory card on which to store save games, the movie NFL: In Just One Play on universal media disk and a special metallic blue version of the console itself. Meanwhile, an included voucher allows the owner to download Beats, a software package for the PSP which enables greater interactivity with the user's music collection by using the beat of the music to adjust gameplay.

Finally, Square Enix has a new announcement this month - and Final Fantasy fans could be anticipating the latest instalment in the gaming franchise as a result. This time around, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII has been unveiled, with a June release date for the European market. The storyline actually takes place some seven years ahead of the original Final Fantasy VII, allowing the player to witness the events leading up to that chapter. The European version promises "gameplay challenges" which were not present in the Japanese incarnation of this episode, while the PSP's widescreen display is used to the full with a cinematic 16:9 aspect ratio.

Xerox WorkCentre 7346 'delivers on tall orders'

29 May 2008

The Xerox WorkCentre 7346 is ideal for meeting the demands of an office environment, the manufacturer asserts.

Costs may also be managed thanks to in-built tools to administrate colour usage in terms of when and how much colour ink is used.

Other features of the Xerox WorkCentre 7346 include a 40 GB hard drive and output speeds of 45 pages per minute in monochrome and 40 pages per minute in colour.

Russell Peacock, president of Xerox's office group, says: "Offices of any size thrive on speed."

He adds: "They demand quality, affordable technology - it's a tall order that the WorkCentre 7346 delivers."

Meanwhile, FabulaTech has announced the new version 3.4 of USB Over Network, which does exactly what it sounds like it should.

The software solution installs on a Windows-based PC to allow USB devices to be accessed remotely, eliminating the need to connect them directly to the networked computer on which they need to be used.

28 May 2008

The creator of the Blackberry has announced the addition of a new model to its line-up. The smartphone manufacturer's devices are used by many business professionals to allow email access and other such functionality while on the move. Now the BlackBerry Bold Smartphone is entering the market with the promise of "unprecedented performance". The handset's liquid crystal display has a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels and is fused to the underside of the lens to help minimise distortion. Developer Research in Motion adds that the resolution of the screen is sufficient to allow web pages to be browsed at near-desktop quality.

Should there be no need for telephone functionality, however, a dedicated compact notebook computer system might be a better option. The VIA OpenBook design has just been released, weighing in at less than 1 kg and coming with a screen of some 8.9 inches in diagonal viewing size. This allows for resolutions of up to 1,024 x 600 pixels to be achieved, while an integrated VGA port means an external display should be able to be used instead. Connectivity is extended with both audio in and audio out jacks, three USB ports and a memory card reader capable of accessing data on SD, MMC, MS and SDIO cards.

Ramblers and rock climbers could instead opt for the JLT8404, a compact system from JLT with a number of rugged features which might make it the ideal option when enjoying the great outdoors. The notebook has a slightly smaller screen size, measuring in at 8.4 inches, but is touchscreen - a fact which may be welcomed by anyone who hates finding a surface suitable for a mouse while out in the open. Drop testing has certified the device as being able to withstand a fall from 1.2 metres, while the operating temperature range reaches from -20 to 50 degrees C.

Toshiba launches new colour MFPs

28 May 2008

If one function just isn't enough, Toshiba's new multi-function printers (MFPs) might be more satisfactory for some people.

Announced by the firm's Tec UK Imaging Systems subsidiary, the e-STUDIO2820c, 3520c and 4520c enable printing, scanning copying and faxing.

When copying, an image of the scanned document is shown on the MFP's built-in screen, helping to prevent paper wastage if the required detail has been missed.

Steve Hewson, marketing director from Toshiba Tec UK Imaging Systems, says: "The new colour series product range offers users a better solution to colour printing than has ever been available.

"The attention to detail with the design of these models ensures that it will take businesses less time to produce professional documents."

Printing speeds of 45 pages per minute may be achieved - but with paper capacity of 3,700 sheets, it should still be a while before the machine needs restocking.

Toshiba recently revealed that its Satellite range of laptop computer systems are now equipped with face recognition, allowing owners to log in by placing their head in front of the built-in webcam.

Vacuum cleaners Review

27 May 2008

Electrolux is looking to deliver products suitable for use by those with a green outlook on life with its upcoming eco-conscious addition to the Ultra Silencer range of vacuum cleaners. The Ultra Silencer Green, or ZUSG3000, is scheduled to be introduced in July 2008 and promises a 33 per cent power saving over counterpart models with equivalent suction. The 1,250-watt model claims to have the cleaning power of a 2,000-watt vacuum cleaner, while the majority of the packaging and of the vacuum cleaner itself is derived from recycled materials. Once the unit reaches the end of its lifespan, 90 per cent of the body of the cleaner can be recycled once more, Electrolux states.

Also in the range is the ZUS3385, or Ultra Silencer 3385, a 1,700-watt unit which has been designed to optimise airflow through the body of the device. Electrolux suggests that the design allows for quieter operation, making this model the "strong, silent type". Easy dust bag removal and disposal makes the vacuum cleaner hygienic to use, the company adds, while keeping dirt enclosed within the dust bag to eliminate the need to clean out a bagless cylinder or to detach parts of the vacuum cleaner in order to dispose of the dirt.

For a little more power - but still with quiet operation in mind - the 1,800-watt ZUS3386 may be preferred. The Ultra Silencer 3386, to give the model its full name, comes with many of the same functions as its slightly less powerful counterpart. Among the key differences noted by Electrolux are the inclusion with this model of a feather duster-style "easy clean" kit and a nozzle specifically designed for use on hard surfaces - which could be ideal for anyone with laminate flooring or wooden floorboards, or those looking for a cleaner capable of working on a tile surface.

Age of Conan logs early success

27 May 2008

PC title Age of Conan could go down in the record books as one of the fastest selling games of its time, it has been revealed.

Following a high number of orders pre-release, visits to the virtual world which poses as the venue for the game have continued to indicate widespread popularity, according to game developer Funcom.

More than 400,000 participants visited the mythical kingdom of Hyboria in the days following its release, more than half of whom were outside of North America.

Trond Arne Aas, chief executive officer of Funcom, says: "This is just the beginning and we look forward to massive updates and cool new features.

"We believe our focus on making Conan unique and groundbreaking is a key reason for the initial success.

The game, whose full title is Age of Conan - Hyborian Adventures, is based on the literary works of Robert E Howard and incorporates aspects of the franchise which have emerged over 75 years of music, movies, artwork and books featuring Conan.

DVD recorders Review

23 May 2008

A number of alternatives to conventional DVD recorders are now on the market for those looking for a slightly different solution to their home recording needs. Computer users might opt for the Portable USB 2.0 DVD ReWritable disk drive from I/OMagic, which attaches to a computer to allow video footage or other data to be stored. The drive has particularly been designed for notebook users in light of the lack - according to the manufacturer - of compact drives to enable DVD media to be written while on the move. I/OMagic chief executive officer Tony Shahbaz adds that many notebooks are equipped with a DVD reader but not a writer, meaning there is a gap in the market for such equipment.

Meanwhile, owners of an Archos TV+ WiFi Digital Video Recorder could soon find they are able to watch recorded programmes no matter where they are. While the device is not a conventional DVD recorder, it incorporates a 250 GB hard drive, enabling video footage or other multimedia content to be stored. Now the new TVportation feature is able to stream files via the internet to any geographical location, with playback possible on handsets such as the Archos 605 WiFi and Archos 705 WiFi players.

Should all those new purchases be adding to the number of remote controls lying around the place, the new One For All Energy Saver universal remote could prove the ideal solution while maintaining eco-friendly principles. The device comes with a power adapter which allows up to four appliances to be connected to a single wall socket. A button on the remote allows the energy passing through the plug to be regulated - meaning energy savings of up to 90 per cent over the amount used on average by electronic goods left on standby.
