FDA asks Congress for more funds: Andrew von Eschenbach, commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration, has said that the agency needs $275m (£140m; {euro}175m) more each year to ensure that imported drugs, medical devices, and foods are safe. The US has had problems recently with heparin for human use imported from China. President Bush asked for a $51m increase, but the FDA said this was not enough to cover higher costs.

Polypill will cost less than $10 a month: Initial clinical tests are about to start on a polypill, a combination of aspirin, a statin, and an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, for patients who have had a myocardial infarction, says the World Heart Federation. The pill is being developed in a collaboration between the Spanish National Centre for Cardiovascular Research and the Ferrer laboratory in Spain and is predicted to cost less than $10 (£5; {euro}6) a month.
