Sydney Pollack dies of cancer at age 73
Academy Award-winning director Sydney Pollack, a Hollywood mainstay who achieved commercial success and critical acclaim with the gender-bending comedy 'Tootsie' and the period drama 'Out of Africa,' has died. He was 73.
Pollack died of cancer Monday afternoon at his home in Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles, surrounded by family, said agent Leslee Dart. He had been diagnosed with cancer about nine months ago, said Dart.
Pollack, who occasionally appeared on the screen himself, worked with and gained the respect of Hollywood's best actors in a long career that reached prominence in the 1970s and 1980s.

A police chase and gun fight ended early Saturday morning with one of three suspects wounded in Sun Valley.
Los Angeles police said they began following a possibly stolen, red compact on San Fernando Road about 5 a.m.
The driver reportedly refused to pull over.
During a subsequent chase, police said someone in the vehicle fired on them and more than once, according to an RMG crew on the scene.
The suspect vehicle crashed into a fence near Lorne Street, where three young men got out of the vehicle and at least one officer opened fire, wounding one of the suspects, RMG reported.

5 Employees Tied Up During Robbery At LA Rite Aid
Two robbers Friday targeted a Rite Aid drug store in the Country Club Park area of Los Angeles.
The assailants tied up five employees and threw them into a shed at the back of the store while they took $4,000 in cash, authorities said.
The robbery at 969 Crenshaw Blvd. occurred around 12:20 a.m., according to Lt. David Evans of the Los Angeles Police Department's Wilshire Station.
A sixth employee, who had not been seen by the men, managed to sneak out of the store and call for help, he said.

Woman Killed In South L.A. Building Fire
A fire in South Los Angeles Wednesday killed a woman and sent a teenager to the hospital, authorities said.
The fire was reported at 5729 S. Morgan Ave. at about 9:20 p.m. Thirty firefighters doused the fire within a half hour, Los Angeles City fire spokesman Ron Myers said.
When firefighters arrived at the building, flames had spread to nearby trees and were threatening neighboring buildings because of the windy conditions.
Firefighters found a severely burned man at the scene, trying to rescue his wife from the building, but she died in the blaze. A 17-year-olde girl was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, Myers said.

2 Killed In North Hollywood Gun Battle
Police say two people were killed and several others wounded in shootings in North Hollywood on Tuesday night.
Shots rang out at Oxnard Street and Whitsett Avenue at about 7 p.m., where one body was found, Los Angeles police spokeswoman Officer Karen Smith said. A few minutes later, a second body was found at another location, at Coldwater Canyon and Vanowen Street, she said.
A suspect was taken into custody with the aid of a police dog, but police believe there are several more suspects at large.

A man with a semiautomatic rifle opened fire at a church festival Saturday, wounding his ex-wife and two bystanders before festival-goers grabbed him and held him for police, authorities and a church official said.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with people screaming and running for the exit after gunfire rang out on a grassy field where the festival was being set up at the St. John Baptist de la Salle Roman Catholic parish.

Rifleman opens fire outside Granada Hills church
A gunman opened fire at a festival outside a church in Granada Hills this morning, wounding three people with a rifle before an off-duty officer tackled the assailant, authorities said.
The shooting took place shortly before 11 a.m. at St. John Baptist de la Salle Catholic Church on the corner of Chatsworth Street and Hayvenhurst Avenue, said Los Angeles Police Officer Norma Eisenman.

DUI Suspect Fatally Shot By CHP Officers
California Highway Patrol officers shot and killed a suspected DUI driver who allegedly pulled out a handgun during a traffic stop in the Westlake area of Los Angeles on Tuesday morning.
The shooting happened just after midnight on West 7th Street at South Westmoreland Avenue, CHP Officer Patrick Kimball said.
"After the suspect exited vehicle, per the orders of the officers, that suspect produced a handgun," CHP Sgt. Mark Garrett told reporters at the scene. "At that point the officers, in self-defense, fired on the suspect, and he was hit more than once and succumbed to his injuries at the scene." Read more

Locke H.S. To Get More Security Following Fight

Locke High School in South Los Angeles will be have extra security on Monday -- a result of Friday's melee on the campus that involved hundreds of students, school officials said.
A fight began shortly before 1 p.m. Friday and quickly grew into an out-of-control brawl.
Dozens of school and LAPD, some in riot gear and using their batons, spent about a half hour to restore order.

Woman Found Stabbed To Death In South L.A. Alley
Police say a 46-year-old woman was found stabbed to death Friday in a South Los Angeles alley.
Jaquelyn Fields, who police say suffered multiple blunt force trauma wounds and several stab wounds, was found at about 9 a.m. by Los Angeles police patrol officers checking a report of a possible dead body in an alley in the 11200 block of South Avalon Boulevard, near East Lomita Boulevard. No murder weapon was found.
Fields was last seen by friends late Thursday night. She often frequented the area of Imperial Highway and Avalon Boulevard, police said. Read more

Griffith Park Fire Remembered 1 Year Later
Approximately one year after a fire tore through 820 acres of Griffith Park, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and City Councilman Tom LaBonge will hold a ceremony in the urban park to honor the firefighters who helped put down the blaze.
The fire began east of the Hollywood sign and quickly moved through Griffith Park, which prompted evacuations from the Los Angeles Zoo, Griffith Observatory, the Autry National Center, and municipal golf course.
Firefighters spent about three days extinguishing the blaze, which the Los Angeles Fire Department estimates burned 820 acres of the 4,200-acre park. Read more

Crack users openly suck on glass pipes, gang members deal drugs on sidewalks and streets are speckled with human feces.
Yet the Los Angeles Police Department and some people who live and work on Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles _ the city with the nation's largest population of homeless people _ say that crime is dropping and that the streets are safer and cleaner than they were just two years ago.
They credit the turnaround to a police crackdown launched 18 months ago and call it a rare success in dealing with homelessness, one of the most troubling social problems facing urban areas nationwide. Read more
