Nearly 20 people have been bitten by ticks in the Krasnoyarsk Territory since the beginning of spring this year. 17 cases of tick bites have been registered in the region since the second March decade. Of those 8 cases are children. Nearly a half of the bitten are Krasnoyarsk citizens.
As Natalia Krasnopeyeva, a spokesperson for the Krasnoyarsk Territory Department of Rospotrebnadzor, a federal regulatory agency for consumer rights' protection and healthcare, explained, no cases of tick encephalitis have happened yet. "The disease may reveal in three or four weeks, not right after a bite. So we cannot say if there are any encephalitis patients among these 17 people bitten by ticks," she said.
The most favorable period for ticks and dangerous for humans is May-June. People who have not been vaccinated against tick encephalitis should protect themselves from ticks when walking in the forest. One should keep far from bushes, wear a cap, light clothes and examine each other as regularly as possible. In case of a tick bite one should remove it as quickly as possible and take the insect to a special laboratory "The Krasnoyarsk Territory Hygienic and Epidemiological Center" to examine it for tick encephalitis virus.
