Federal Minister Steinmeier welcomes positive development of relations between Beijing and Taipei

29.05.2008

Beijing and Taipei yesterday (28 May) agreed to launch a new dialogue to improve their relations. The first talks are to focus on establishing regular flights between Taiwan and the mainland and on opening Taiwan to Chinese tourists.

Commenting on this, Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement today (29 May) in Berlin:

"The agreement reached yesterday is important progress on the road to normalizing relations between Beijing and Taipei. It shows the two sides want to look to the future together.

I hope the recent agreements can open the way for more contacts and better understanding. Now these positive moves have to be underpinned by confidence-building measures."
