Hours of fun to be had with this game. HOP is arcade style and messing about with payloads and fuel is not part of the fun. A mission is presented to you which may involve attacking Guadacanal, recon on a shipping fleet in the pacific, protecting your own aircraft carriers or engaging in a huge dogfight etc (Or even all of the previous).
The game is well presented and visually pleasing. The missions are varied and can take some time to master. The flight controls are responsive (using a joystick)and each plane handles differently. One tip is that the rudder control only works at a certain speed. Youll soon master that. There are four classes of plane, fighters, dive bombers, torpedo bombers and the heavy duty bombers. Within the four classes there are many planes that can be used, unlocked or upgraded throughout the campaign modes.
The storyline and cut scenes of actual footage of the battle in the Pacific are good.On the down side the game does get a bit pro USA ish. i.e `no one messes with the US and gets away with it` (Theyre simple people it keeps em happy). And you can only stay within a certain area and altitude before you get a `Crowe get back to the combat zone` warning.
All in all this is an extremely enjoyable game. If youre looking for waypoints and patrolling certain grid locations with limited ammunition and calculating fuel percentatages etc then this is not the game for you. If youre looking for an instant dogfight and bombing run on ships and land targets then this game is the one.

This has some of the best 3D graphics ive seen and a high spec PC is a requirement for this. This game is very much an arcade style type of simulator in that you are guided through missions and told what to hit as you are flying making it all very easy to know what you are doing without ever reading any manual of any kind. The only realistic feature is that you can stall if you go to slow. Other than that though you are normally faced against overwhelming hordes of enemy planes which you sometimes have to ignore just to bomb a ground target in time to save some general. The action is non stop and relentless and it is difficult even at rookie level to shoot down planes sometimes because the planes take many shots to shoot down depending on their armour level. Previous flight sim dogfight experience would be handy here but you do get unlimited ammo so you do get them eventually. As you complete missions you get awarded points and new more advanced planes are unlocked in the same way cars are unlocked in rally sims. With your upgrade points you can upgrade your plane to a better version which has better guns for example. You start off in the rubbish P40 Warhawk but get better planes such as the Dautless, Corsair and Hellcat as you progress. The inbetween mission video clips and summaries of what actually happened during the Pacific war are brilliant and explain why this is on a DVD-ROM. Another great feature is that if you are in a plane with a rear gunner - the gunner does all the work automatically firing at other planes and ships as you fly the thing. You also fly with wingmen in the game which you command using only 4 general commands (such as defend this area)- luckily the wingmen usually do a good job. The only downer is even at the easy level (1/5 rookie) the tasks seem a bit too hard.

Not only will you fly a diverse range of fighters but also catalinas, bombers, dive bombers, torpedo bombers all having there own feel, so no plane feels the same, you can even upgrade planes to increase there armour / agility / speed / gun power
Can only think that the other review to this game saying that this game is dark has a very low spec system as my system is only of average spec and the graphics / detail level are superb.
Also i thought that it was very easy to control the planes
You will not regret buying this game, but if youre still unsure see the videos / demo on the codemasters website, personally i have been waiting for a decent game of this one type for some time and this one more than satisfies me.
