Future scenario building – Feb 2005

Submit Your Vision for Academic Medicine!

The International Campaign to Revitalise Academic Medicine (ICRAM) is a global initiative that is committed to developing a new vision for academic medicine. This will focus on increasing the relevance to communities of institutions that educate doctors and other health professionals, conduct biomedical and health systems research, and care for patients. Led by a core working party of medical academics representing 14 countries, ICRAM aims to redefine the core values of academic medicine and stimulate a public debate on the future visions for academic medicine.

We would like to ask you to join us in developing this new vision.

We believe that your  perspective is crucial to our work, and we would like to ask you to contribute a submission of approximately 1000 words that addresses the five following visions questions.  Your contribution will be used in the ICRAM analysis and workshop on future visions for academic medicine (February 2005), and credited in ICRAM’s Final Report and related publicity, due September 2005.

The February futures scenario workshop is aimed at describing a number of  very different alternative future scenarios for academic medicine; it will be facilitated by Philip Hadridge (NHS, UK) who has extensive experience with scenario planning. We are keen to have as broad a range of input into this as possible ---hence this request.

We don’t want to restrain your ideas and we’re keen for extreme visions to be represented --- please do not hesitate to submit radical, creative, grave, or idealistic visions of the future of academic medicine in your region or setting!

 The Five Questions

  1. What are the major issues we currently face in AM (both those within and those beyond our control)?
  2. Given these trends, what new performance competencies (roles, functions) do you think AM needs to acquire?
  3. If you were worried about one thing in AM, what would it be and why?
  4. In your experience with AM, what are the strengths and weakness of AM’s contribution to your community (organization, journal, etc.)?
  5. If you had total control over AM, what would you do?

We gratefully look forward to receiving your submission as soon as possible. You can send your submission via email to the project manager of the campaign, Jocalyn Clark

Thank you in advance for your valuable assistance.  Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions.
