Nintendo Wii games Review

02 May 2008

A blend of old and new could be coming the way of the Wii soon as Rubik's Puzzle World is set to hit the motion-sensitive console. Combining a classic handheld puzzle with the modern handheld console gaming action of the Wii, this is to see the cube-shaped conundrum presented in three-dimensional format on screen. A selection of related challenges is also likely to feature, which could please those who like mazes, along with the chance to create a unique soundtrack to accompany the game. The launch of the Wii version comes some 28 years after the cube itself was released, becoming an iconic representation of the 1980s as a result.

Cartoon Network viewers may celebrate the news that a second game featuring Ben 10 is soon to be available on the Nintendo Wii. Ben 10: Alien Force is not limited to the console, however, as it is also to be published in versions for the PS2, PSP and Nintendo DS. More than 20 different enemies are to appear in the game, posing a variety of obstacles to the player, while Ben himself can also take forms ranging from Humungousaur to Spidermonkey, offering the gamer a choice of talents which could provide the necessary skills to make it through a particular mission or challenge.

For a type of game that has proved popular over the years, pinball possibly provides the potential to please players. Dream Pinball 3D brings the tables to computer and television screens the world over as it hits the consoles in formats for both Wii and Nintendo DS, as well as a PC version. Chief executive officer of developer SouthPeak Games Melanie Mroz explains that bar-style games have been "extremely popular" with customers over the years. Motion blur effects and realistic ball physics may help to increase the chance of Dream Pinball 3D leaving its players in a flipping good mood.

Wii owners offered 'a friend fur all seasons'

25 April 2008

The image of console gamers as spending their days in a darkened room could be in for an update, as Wii owners are being given the chance to create some new friends of their own design.

Build-A-Bear Workshop A Friend Fur All Seasons is due to make an appearance on the console, providing users with a virtual taste of the bear-making process which appears in the firm's high street stores.

A Nintendo DS version has already been introduced, but the company asserts that it wanted to give Wii fanatics the chance to get stuck into bear production too.

Henrik Mathiasen, president of software studio The Game Factory, says: "We're thrilled to extend our licensing agreement with Build-A-Bear Workshop to create a Wii game that the whole family can enjoy."

Build-A-Bear already gives its customers the opportunity to try the process without visiting one of its real-world stores thanks to a walkthrough of the entire bear production procedure on the company's website.

Potter returns

23 April 2008

For Harry Potter fans, there may be no need to know more than that their hero is to make a fresh appearance on games consoles the world over.

However, for everyone else a little more detail may be desired - with Electronic Arts and Warner Bros duly obliging.

The games producers have announced the scheduled launch of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to coincide with the release of the movie.

Romance and tragedy have parts to play in the sixth instalment in the series, with the game allowing fans to experience the storyline in an interactive way.

Nintendo Wii owners are told that the game has been particularly designed to make use of their console's tilt-sensitive controller.

But PC, PSP, PS2, PS3, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, Mac and mobile users have been informed that they can expect a version for their system to be available too.

Previous instalment Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix clung to the top of the charts for a number of weeks, with the release of the final book in the series suggested as a potential factor boosting sales.

Nintendo Wii games Review

Some names stand out when they appear in the headlines and, for gamers, Square Enix could be one of those. The studio behind the Final Fantasy franchise has been back in the news recently with the announcement of the next instalment in the series which promises to cater for Nintendo Wii owners. Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon is the first game in the series to appear on the console and, Square Enix notes, is to be exclusive to the gesture-based system. Among the strange and wondrous environments to appear in the game is a village where, each time the bell tower tolls, the inhabitants lose their memories.

For anyone who ever aspired to come to the rescue of a damsel in distress - or, in these enlightened times, to be the heroine of the hour - Emergency Heroes could be the perfect opportunity. Some 16 different rescue vehicles are available in the game, with which the player is able to respond to calls for assistance. All three emergency services are represented as the player is given the option of taking on police, ambulance or fire duties and carrying out their duty on behalf of the people of San Alto.

Electronics manufacturer Zappies has a new product which could be the answer to many Wii users' prayers, as it introduces its Nunchuk Wireless Kit exclusively to the UK market. This comes in two parts, one which enables wireless transmission from the nunchuk controller and a second which attaches to the Wii remote to allow data to be received. As a result, the two parts of the control system are relinquished from their tether to one another, offering that little extra freedom to manoeuvre during more frenzied head-to-head games - or when playing alone - with tangled cables made a thing of the past.

Nintendo Wii games Review

27 March 2008

Nintendo Wii owners are being provided with a proliferation of new games to take up their free time at the moment, with launches taking place now and more scheduled for the summer. Among the most eagerly anticipated releases, perhaps, is Mario Kart Wii, which sees the offbeat racing game brought to the console. With the game itself comes a special fascia for the Wii remote which is shaped, naturally, like a steering wheel to allow for a more intuitive racing experience. For those who prefer to use the Wii remote in its usual guise, the option of doing so is available, while the Nunchuk controller may also be used alongside it.

Role-playing game Opoona is also hitting the shelves at the moment and Wii owners might welcome the news that it is exclusive to their console. Players take control of the eponymous hero after his family's spaceship has suffered an unexplained disaster, attempting to build a new life on the planet he lands on while simultaneously hunting down the other members of his family. There is an element of battle to be had along the way, but luckily Opoona is descended from the Cosmo Guards, a long line of brave warriors.

Finally, a plethora of titles based on Humongous characters are expected to be available from the summer onwards, according to games studio Majesco. The trilogy of titles comprises Freddi Fish, Pajama Sam and Spy Fox, each likely to feature the characteristics of the relevant hero, along with the gesture-based control system offered by the Nintendo Wii. The series incorporates elements of strategy designed to be challenging to children of all ages - a unique feature within the video games market, according to Majesco, which could prove popular with parents hoping to give their offspring a mental workout along with the physical exercise which often accompanies Wii games.

Nintendo sales record 'smashed'

19 March 2008

Super Smash Bros Brawl has broken the record for the fastest selling title on Nintendo platforms, it has been revealed.

Figures from Nintendo show that, since its launch for the handheld Nintendo Wii console, more than 1.4 million copies have been sold in the US alone.

This is a new record for purchases of a Nintendo title by consumers in the country, the company says.

Executive vice-president of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway comments: "It's important to remember that we have lots more fun on the way.

"Upcoming titles like Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit will keep our momentum going strong."

Iconic characters such as Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog and plucky Pokemon Pikachu may be responsible for the widespread appeal of Super Smash Bros Brawl.

Super Smash Bros Brawl was initially launched in Japan but, following the US rollout, Nintendo noted that European gamers would have to be patient until the official introduction of the game to the continent.

Bully: Scholarship edition set for launch

04 March 2008

European gamers will be able to get their hands on the Wii and Xbox 360 editions of Bully: Scholarship Edition from Friday.

Previously only available on PlayStation 2, Bully offers gamers "something unique", according to Rockstar Games' president and co-founder Sam Houser.

He explained it is a challenge to create a comedy-action game in any genre and that it was "really difficult" for game creators of Bully as the scene was set in a high school environment.

A great deal of "love and care" went into Bully, Mr Houser said, expressing the hopes that gamers would love the game as much as its creators do.

There are new options for single and multiple players, as well as optimised graphics, new classes and missions.

The official Xbox magazine praised the gameplay richness and humour introduced by the creators.

"We'd jam a dunce cap on anyone who passes it up," it states.

Wii games Review

18 February 2008

Owners of the Nintendo Wii will have something to be happy about as the console is set to see a number of fresh titles hit shelves in the near future. The leap year may prove to be extra fortunate for those who enjoy action games as Rising Star - maker of Bomberman Story and Luminous Arc on the DS - releases No More Heroes. The title makes innovative use of the Wii's Remote by allowing players to trace a circle in the air to knock back enemy characters as they attack.

Those who have more of a need for speed may be tempted by Donkey Kong Jet Race which was recently released. Gamers are able to take control of a host of familiar faces including Donkey, Diddy and Dixie Kong as well a few new faces. Players shake both the Wii Remote and Nunchuck controllers to get themselves up to maximum speed and then use the devices to dodge objects, collect items and foil their opponents' efforts to reach the end of the race before they do. Gamers can also take part in a number of different tests as part of Candy Kong's challenges which must be completed in a set amount of time to ensure victory.

Finally, Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 has recently been released by Electronic Arts and allows Wii players to take part in 32-person multiplayer action whenever they wish in three different modes and across a range of six maps. The Wii version of the game also features an all-new arcade mode which the manufacturer explains will allow a user of any skill level to get involved in the action by moving the character around automatically, allowing the gamer to focus on shooting using the Remote and Zapper.

Games consoles top holiday spending

08 January 2008

Games consoles proved to be the most in-demand presents over the 2007 Christmas period, comScore reveals.

In its final update of online purchasing for the festive season, the internet analyst ranks consoles, games and accessories as the sector with the largest growth.

Overall, sales of such products were up by 129 per cent when compared with the previous year.

The Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation brands are given as examples of how hardware sales have buoyed the console market.

Meanwhile, games such as Halo 3 are said to have helped contribute towards the level of sales recorded.

The news follows figures from Sony which showed that 3.9 million PS2s, PS3s and PSPs were sold over the holiday season.

Among these, the PSP was most popular, with 1.4 million of the handheld consoles shipped in just over a month.

Sony added that, despite the launch of the PS3, the PS2 remains popular thanks to games such as Buzz and SingStar.

Nintendo Wii fans can take their winter sports experience to the next level thanks to the release of Winter Sports 2008 - The Ultimate Challenge on the platform from Activision. A total of 15 disciplines await gamers, across nine different sports that are sure to test players as well as provide them with endless entertainment. Multiple tournament options sees split screen action between two players or hotseat for four players as they compete for medals and records on the slopes. More than 40 missions also await players, with competition getting harder and harder until the awaiting boss at the end of each challenge.

Something quite different is offered by Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles. The latest instalment of the hit game series from Capcom is the first on the Wii, packing the usual action and adventure - as well as the shocks and surprises - that can be expected from the horror game franchise. Using the new Zapper peripheral, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles brings a new gameplay aspect to this console favourite, using old locations as well as brand new ones to bring a great new title to Wii gamers.

Taking the frights and fear down a notch on the Wii is The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night, the latest title featuring the purple dragon. The newest game featuring Spyro has voice work from Hollywood big names Elijah Wood and Gary Oldman, while new attacks and moves for Spyro will make the game more playable than ever before. Meanwhile, Skabb the Pirate and Gaul the Ape King are among the new end-of-level baddies awaiting the purple hero as he takes to his mission in The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night.
