Heinz U.K. Pulls Controversial Ad Showing Men Kissing

The first ad out the gate for Heinz's new ad agency AMV BBDO (since it won the £10m-a-year U.K. business last year) wasn't too well received. The ad, which featured two men sharing a kiss has been withdrawn - and Heinz has apologized. The ad for their Deli Mayo product ran for less than a week.

So the product is so bad for kids that they pulled the ad? Wow those Brits are strict.

The funny part was that this ad was labeled as unsuitable for children, but not because of the homosexuality nor the kissing. No, it was labeled as unfit for children since it advertised a product which was high in fat, sodium, and sugar content. This just tells us how far our values as a society have shifted.

The hypocrisy of this gets to me as well. It is okay for 2 consenting adults to choose their sexual practices and the persons of their affections. It is their bodies. It is even an expectant mother's choice to be able to terminate her pregnancy. Afterall, it is her body. However, it is not okay to have autonomy over what you eat, even if it means eating something unhealthy. Then the invariable argument we hear is, "Well, you will make yourself ill and then we have to pay for it." Well, insurance and public programs also cover contraceptives, abortions, HIV care, and other things, a lot of which would not be needed if people avoided premarital/extramarital sex and sharing drug needles. So if it is okay that society can pay for someone's abortion or their AIDS medications, then why complain about paying for my heart surgery if it was caused by eating "greaseballs" from the local fast food restaurant every day?

I watched the video. I'm not a prude, and the kiss did not offend me. But, is it really an advert for mayo and mustard or is it a gay pride commercial? Two men kissing is not going to make me run out and buy condiments. The world of advertising has veered too far off track. Tell me why I should buy your product. Don't try to entice me with fluff. I don't care who drinks your beer, wears your underwear, or uses your mustard. Tell me why you are better.

Although I do not share all your moral views (I would rather fund one abortion then 18 years of childcare) you have a great point. We are either at on extreme or another.

No matter your stance on the ad or the reasons for its' being pulled, the marketing people know that a lost customer is very difficult to recover. When a consumer turns against a product the whole company suffers. Kraft isn't afraid of a drop in mayo sales, they're afraid of a huge drop in sales across the board. It happens.

I read somewhere that the original idea behind the ad was that the deli style mayo was supposed to be so "authentic" that it turned the woman into the deli guy when making the sandwiches.

Truthfully, I didn't see that in the ad shown here though. At least he wasn't wearing a terrorist scarf. Now that would have been really bad

I think when the British people find out that there are men that kiss other men, they can bring the commercial back. (Meant to be sarcastic)

I agree with most of what you say.

Here is hypocrisy in full bloom.

Here in Canada it's illegal to smoke in any public or government building. The smokers are chased outside with their legally obtained product and now must be at least 100 feet or so away from the buildings because the air intake could suck in second hand smoke.

At the same time we have 'safe injection' centres for the mainline addicts. They can go to a nice, clean, warm office where they are supplied with sterile needles and a safe place to shoot up. Many of the sites have a registered nurse or registered nurses' aide present in case they run into difficulty or overdose.

So, while the addicts are inside shooting up in warmth and safety....committing a felony, the smokers are outside in the rain, wind and snow while they use their legal product and whose taxes are paying for the addicts comfort.

For anyone who's wondering, I don't smoke.

We are doomed as a species.

I agree most with this post, tell me about your product, and don't do it with saying how bad the other guy is, just how good yours is!
The ones that just floor me are the car commercials, you never get to see the inside and how nice it is, they got some idiot driving it at 100mph sliding sideways with a disclaimer under it, yea, like that is 'cool'..Or they have a babe dressed all sexy...I can't figure it out..
I'll stay with Kraft and let the other guys kiss the butcher..

I didn't think this commercial was that big of a deal. I actually thought it was kinda funny. There have been far more offensive commercials shown. If it were two woman, I would say it wouldn't have been pulled.

The one part of the commercial that didn't air is kind of freaky:
After they kiss, the first guy tells the other, "Is that mayo on your lips, or have you been cheating on me again?"

Those wacky Brits.

So, you would rather fund the murder of an unborn child than give him/her the opportunity to be adopted. Well, ok, whatever gets you through the day.
