Spanish parliament to extend rights to apes
By Martin Roberts
MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's parliament voiced its support on Wednesday for the rights of great apes to life and freedom in what will apparently be the first time any national legislature has called for such rights for non-humans.
Parliament's environmental committee approved resolutions urging Spain to comply with the Great Apes Project, devised by scientists and philosophers who say our closest genetic relatives deserve rights hitherto limited to humans.
"This is a historic day in the struggle for animal rights and in defense of our evolutionary comrades, which will doubtless go down in the history of humanity," said Pedro Pozas, Spanish director of the Great Apes Project.

New Cops Get Lesson In Diversity At Apollo Theater
The NYPD invited some of its most vocal critics Monday to a community outreach program for rookie cops that was beefed up after the shooting death of an unarmed man on his wedding day.
More than 1,000 new recruits filled Harlem's famed Apollo Theater for the start of a four-day program, "Advancing Community Trust," that will focus on issues like diversity and the department's stop-and-frisk policy, which has been criticized for singling out minorities.
The panel discussion Monday included such NYPD critics as the Rev. Lester Williams, the Queens pastor who was to marry Sean Bell and his fiancee Nov. 26, 2006 but instead presided over the 23-year-old's funeral a week after the slaying.

Legal issue affects timings of gay weddings
Drew Snyder and William Ballentine had a commitment ceremony with all the trimmings four years ago, the closest they could get to a wedding at the time.
Now that California's highest court has held that two men may be legally married starting later this month, friends want to know when the Los Angeles couple plan to take their relationship to the next level.
The answer: Not any time soon.
The problem is a citizen referendum on the November ballot that would overturn the state Supreme Court's landmark decision that denying gay couples the right to wed was discriminatory. It means same-sex couples face the uncertainty of whether they would still be legally wed if the ballot measure were to pass.
