Obsessive fuel savers risk safety for economy

It’s a good idea, of course, to try to save on fuel. The problem comes when people who don’t know what they’re doing seize on what they think are the principles of hypermiling, leading them to adopt dangerous tactics, such as driving too slowly in traffic, tailgating larger vehicles or “drafting” (driving in another vehicle’s slipstream to reduce wind resistance) too closely, rolling through stop signs or making turns without using the brakes.

If done sensibly hypermiling is a good thing. The key thing is to not change you speed drastically, either accelerating to hard or using your brakes too much.

However the proviso is that you are paying to the road contions first and drive accordingly.

Whether you're doing a steady 50 mph or 60 mph matters little. However those that travel way below the speed limit will iritate other road users and the end result could be ugly. Certainly not worth the pennies saved on fuel.

Blame the environmentalist, blame all the hard core LIBERAL LEFTISTS for the high fuel cost.

POLOSI, BOXER, FEINSTEIN and the other the rest of the radical left wingers must be thrown to the dogs.

Blame them for the soaring increase for groceries, and for eveything else because everything depends on fuel for delivery.

There are millions and millions of oil fields in over half of the States and off the coastlines. The Environmental movement (mental deficient movement) have put a stop to drilling.

VOTERS, take out your frustration out this November, throw the miserasble liberals out of office and keep new ones out.

Amen! Add to that: accelerate moderately, get into high gear as soon as possible, let up on the gas and coast more when preparing to stop. I see too many drivers that keep their foot on the gas until it's time to jam on the brakes, instead of letting up on the gas and coasting that last few hundred feet to a stop sign or red light. That's just good driving technique, regardless of gasoline prices.

Being sensible about driving easily outweighs any insane tactics like drafting. If someone tries to draft on me, I consider it tailgating...I slow down until they pass me. I taught defensive driving about 30 years ago and tailgating was and is a no-no. You do not have time to react to changing conditions in traffic. Too dangerous to do.

The Media want to put Obama in power, so LA Times and all newspapers will try to psych the American people telling them that Obama is leading.
The media made their points. Are we going as Americans let the Eastern magnates that are punish us Americans by keeping their oil to themselves in order to harm the Americans dictate that Obama their favorite is to rule the American people. Everything that is going on now: Recession due to the East keeping their oil to themselves and cause world hunger in the World is because of Obama Hussein.

The East wants Obama Hussein and they are trying to make Bush look so bad that the people will be blinded by Obama.

What "change" Obama can bring. This word "change" that he uses again and again testifies that he enjoyed the hateful racist speech of his pastor Wright. The word "change" that he promised to the American people tell the White people and "those who don't get it" that Obama hates U.S. as it is as much as Wright.

His plan: Release the terrorists that are in jail in America, Enslave White people to avenge the Black slaves, convert America to Islam, remove free speech, and anything that makes America great. For Obama, the Easterners are perfect and America need to change. I wonder if Obama read his history book or if he hates America so much that he cannot see that the East still has slavery.

The ones who are behind Obama are the terrorists who are trapped here and cannot blow people up, the Jews of Gaza who hate president Bush for helping Ariel Sharon kick them out of Gaza, they boast of making Ariel Sharon a vegetable through Jewish voodoo, the democrats who want the White House at all cost and many of them are Islamic, the Black people who have been poisoned by hatred by both White, Yellow, Black, etc. Islamics, those who hate free speech, those who hate president Bush more than life itself because he kicked the terrorists'butt, etc. That is a bad bunch who want to replace the Republicans. All of them have one reason or another to make the Americans who backed up President Bush pay.

Hypermilers are a pain in the ass to drive behind. Their driving is erratic and forces everyone behind them to burn gas by tapping the brakes or accelerating, or just passing them. I cant maintain a steady speed behind them which ruins my fuel economy.

They save a few gallons while risking everyone else's safety.

I agree, the fuel you save will be lost in the increased insurance premiums and funeral costs from accidents, driving is not a right its a privilege granted by the state,i can't wait to read the first news story about the idiot who pleads 'drafting' as a defense in traffic court.

We have been trained since birth to spend money as fast as we can make it. It's not a shock that most people resist the ability to save some.

It's O.K. to save some money. Go ahead and turn off the lights when your not in the room... Drive slower, 55mph add's 10mpg compared to 65mph. You were raised doing 55 on the freeway.. ask your momma about it. LOL

i drive 55 pass my ass if you dont like it 70 is way too fast and will cause wrecks as ppl always do 5 mph over the limit.
