Jason Richards, the splendid point guard on the Davidson College basketball team, says he'll be replaying in his mind for the rest of his life his long, last-second shot that missed, putting Kansas and not the Wildcats in the NCAA tournament's Final Four.
No doubt he will. But he should also remember the sheer joy of the moment pictured at left, when he and Stephen Curry (left) celebrated the upset victory over Georgetown that would be followed by another upset over Wisconsin. Mr. Curry's astonishing shooting captured the headlines, but it was the entire team's dauntless spirit and stellar performance that made the Wildcats the favorite of everyone who wasn't already rooting for another team in the tournament. in My Opinion: Can't shake Davidson withdrawal

I see you moping. I see you moving at half speed, not really caring if you get there.
And I hear you. I hear you saying what if. What if Jason Richards had hit the shot and what if Stephen Curry had put the ball in the air and Richards and not Curry had brought the ball up court and Davidson had hit more free throws and Andrew Lovedale had not fouled out?
Three days after Davidson's two-point loss to the Jayhawks and we're -- our city and region -- still not all the way back.
The last time I saw a sporting event leave us so flat was on the second day of February, 2004. The night before, New England had beaten the Carolina Panthers by a field goal in Super Bowl XXXVIII. Read more

“On the court, it's the four best teams in the country. It's all there.”
The last shot of an otherwise dull two days finally injected a measure of suspense into the NCAA men's tournament's penultimate weekend. Top seeds UCLA, North Carolina and Memphis had already landed in the Final Four with easy victories. Only Jason Richards's three-pointer at the buzzer Sunday could keep Kansas from joining them.
But the shot sailed wide of the rim, dispatching Davidson, the lone underdog remaining.
An event built on Hollywood stories delivered few this year, but a blockbuster may yet await: a Final Four packed with the most talented teams in the country. For the first time since the NCAA began seeding the men's tournament in 1979, all four number one seeds advanced to the Final Four, making San Antonio host to a talent show unseen before in college basketball. “That's something that can't be taken away, and I know people won't forget what we did.”
The silence as Davidson walked off the court following its 59-57 loss to Kansas spoke volumes.
Davidson players and fans knew the Wildcats were so close to a landmark win, but once the haze from that clears, the team might begin to appreciate what it accomplished.
'We came two points away from the Final Four,' Davidson coach Bob McKillop said. 'For a school with 1,700 students, with the academic rigor that we have, that's a remarkable statement about effort.'
Davidson had won 25 straight games to earn its first AP ranking since 1970, and earned its first NCAA tournament wins since 1969. Guard Stephen Curry was named to All-American lists, and point guard Jason Richards led the nation in assists. Read more
