John McCain and family values

Many lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people are parents.

The 2000 U.S. Census details 33 percent of female same-sex couple households and 22 percent of male same-sex couple households reported at least one child under the age of 18 living in the home and as of 2005, an estimated 270,313 children in the United States live in households headed by same-sex couples.

Additionally, half of gay men and 41 percent of lesbians who don’t already have children say they want to become a parent at some point in their lives.

Nevertheless, LGBT parenting in general, and adoption by LGBT couples in particular, can be a hot issue of major political controversy.
