It wasn't much of a surprise that Albert Gastmann would leave his estate to Trinity College when he died.
But the size of the gift stunned even those who knew him well.
'When he left [nearly] $3 million to the college, I almost had a stroke,' said Brigitte Schulz, chairwoman of Trinity's political science department.
Over nearly 20 years, Schulz had grown to think of Gastmann as a father. She talked to him daily and treasured his tolerance and intellectual curiosity. But she also knew him as a thrifty man, given to wearing the same old sweaters, and she never had an inkling of his fortune.
