It is marginally true. Both entities operate in a grey area between officially sanctioned troops and a totally private army. Both receive a wink and a nod from their respective governments as they enjoy more latitude in dealing with their various charges (than gov't troops), but are protected by the same governments left hand. Hard to say what the motives of many FFL troops are, but in many cases I'm certain it's not patriotism. (Saturday Jun 7 | post #43)

You make a great point. Add to that the inclination or temptation of the sitting powers to use private "armies" for "unofficial " ops in foreign lands that might be considered to "dirty" for U.S. troops. The French Foreign Legion provides some great examples. (Friday Jun 6 | post #39)
