Injured caver trapped for two days charged

A man who thought he would die after becoming trapped in a remote underground cave for 51 hours has been charged by police.

Geoff McDonnell, 47, was pinned by rocks about 80 metres underground after entering the Wombeyan Caves in the NSW Southern Highlands alone last month to take photographs.

Police have charged McDonnell with entering a cave without authority, risking the safety of a person in the park, and entering a closed part of the park.

Group tracks creatures in Ohio caves

Bill Stitzel ditched his "Guano: Breakfast of cavers" sweat shirt, knotted his do-rag and strapped on elbow and knee pads. The Springfield mechanic and three fellow cavers were suiting up in front of a faded red barn near their camp site, preparing for an early morning hike.

Their destination was a hole in a hill about a mile away, where they would continue their summer homework _ taking inventory of everything that lives in Ohio caves.

Endangered animals found in Missouri backyard cave

State wildlife officials have found endangered cavefish and crustaceans in a natural spring on land owned by a state legislator. State Rep. Jim Viebrock, a Republican who represents western Greene County, said he first discovered the albino animals two years ago when he ventured into the cave opening that leads to the spring 22 feet underground.

"I was shining a light down there one day and I saw something move," said Viebrock, who has owned the farm west of Republic for six years. "It was a big albino crawdad."

A state conservation officer later confirmed Viebrock's find and determined the cave also includes endangered blind Ozark cavefish. It's the 35th known cavefish site in the greater Ozarks area, the Missouri Department of Conservation said.
