Helms never changed on civil rights opposition

He was a nasty, mean son of a bi**h. He not only looked down on the black community he looked down on anyone who was poor. He backed any legislation that crippled the efforts of the poor or under privleged to get ahead. The country is much better off with him gone.

Shoe I do not care for him either, but be careful that you do not become the monster you say he was.

At the time he opposed the Civil Rights Bill, Helms was a democrat and it was the republicans who passed the bill.

Funny, I see Jesse Helms as a man of principle who stood by his worldview and beliefs, whether others liked it or not. His constituents seemed to like him too, as they kept returning him to office.

Most people don't have the guts he had, and their opinions, if they even have any real ones, change with the wind. That is the epitome of disgusting cowardice; very typical of the race of man. Quite simply, whatever is currently popular shapes the worldview of the vast majority of people; history is replete with examples.

Both Southern Democrats and Republicans were the only groups in opposition.

First yes he did vote against Civil Right, just as did current Senator robert Byrd who has voted against every Black Nominee and still does, he has thrown his support to Obama but has done so for every Democrat Nominee so this is no suprise.
George Wallace, funny that name should come up, what a really bad guy, he was and then he changed his ways, did you know that! He renounced what he had done and gave an apology! An in an interview after his Death, one of his Workers, A Black Man stated he was always kind and fair to him and everyone was treated the same. Oh yes and when he came out and changed his ways, He Left the Democrat Party and became a Republican! Also He had a grown Daughter who had found out his identity, all through her life she never knew, but was she not told! Something both Parents thought was the right thing for her. He also supported His Child Financially! His Wife knew of this also. Then if any of you would have seen the news when they interviewed his daughter who is Black, you would know this!

I don't know where you are getting your information but Goldwater was in the House in 1964 and the Dixicrats didn't switch parties until Nixon in 1969. Back in 1963 Kennedy was cramming the Civil Rights down the Democrat's throats and most of them even today do not like it one little bit. My ex father-in-law was a Democrat and he was the first to tell you that giving the black their rights was a big mistake. Here in the South the majority of the Klan's men were Dixiecrats. Those few Republicans who were members were actually Dixiecrats at heart and that was the end of it.

Jesse Helms was just another bigoted Dixiecrat whom not even the Northern Republicans could stand. The reason why he was so popular in North Carolina was because it was up until here recently a Klan state.
