Heavy rain, floods kill at least 3 in western Japan

TOKYO (Reuters) - Heavy rain and flooding hit central and western Japan on Monday, killing at least three and leading authorities to issue temporary evacuation orders to thousands in the area.

An official at a fire department in Kobe, 435 km southwest of Tokyo, said the Coast Guard had found three people, including two children, dead in Toga River in the city.

National broadcaster NHK reported that 11 people, including some children playing beside the same river, had been swept away.

Domestic media also showed a muddy river overflowing in the city of Kanazawa, about 300 km west of Tokyo, a bridge broken in the storms, and trucks nearly submerged in water in central and western Japan.

Powerful typhoon makes landfall in Taiwan

A powerful typhoon struck Taiwan early Monday, closing schools and businesses and grounding domestic and international air traffic.

Typhoon Fung Wong made landfall on the east central coast just before daybreak, packing winds of 105 miles per hour. It is expected to drop up to 36 inches of rain on the central portion of the island and perhaps half of that much on its southern and northern extremities, including the capital of Taipei.

Fung Wong hit Taiwan just a week after tropical storm Kalmaegi killed 19 people and left six others missing on the island.
