A Moss Point man convicted of Katrina fraud and other charges lied about where he was living when the storm hit to obtain more than $113,000 in disaster funds and other assistance from federal and state agencies, according to U.S. Attorney Dunn Lampton.
Lee Taylor was convicted earlier this month of three counts of fraud and one count each of theft against FEMA and making false statements to the Mississippi Development Authority to obtain homeowner grant assistance.
Taylor lied about living in a home he owned in Moss Point when Hurricane Katrina came ashore in 2005. As a result, FEMA gave him $23,841 and a travel trailer to live in. Read more

Some Ark. Communities Evacuated As Waters Rise

Emergency management officials began evacuating communities along the White River in east-central Arkansas on Tuesday because a rural levee showed signs of weakening amid the region's prolonged flooding.
Tommy Jackson, a spokesman for the state Department of Emergency Management, said he didn't know how many people lived in the area, north of Interstate 40 in Prairie County.
"The levee hasn't breached, but it is stressed," Jackson said.
Elsewhere in Arkansas, teams of state and federal officials were preparing Tuesday to examine flood-damaged buildings and businesses. Read more
