Man jumps off bridge
SACRAMENTO A man jumped off the Jibboom Street Bridge and presumably drowned Thursday afternoon in the American River.
Witnesses described him as a white male, about 30 years old.
Fire Department and park officials said the man reportedly asked passers-by to watch his belongings, took off his shirt and jumped off the bridge in Discovery Park about 3:50 p.m.
"We don't know why he jumped," said Battalion Chief Rich Payan.
The man surfaced a couple of times and then disappeared under the water. He left behind a sleeping bag, clothes and a garbage bag, but no identification, officials said.
"He might have been homeless, but we don't know," said Battalion Chief Jonathan Williams.
