LEARNING HOW TO PLAY CHINESE CHESS

The board

Chinese Chess is played on a board which contains 64 squares. The pieces are placed on the intersections of the lines, called points. Thus, Chinese Chess is played on effectively a board of 9 x 10 points. On each side of the board in Chinese Chess, there is a palace, areas of size three by three points: these are distinguished by the cross that goes through it.. Neither the king nor the guards of the kings are allowed to leave the palace. In the middle, there is a river.

Each player has the following pieces:2 Rooks, 2 Knights, 2 Elephants, 2 Mandarins, 1 King, 2 Cannons, and 5 Pawns.

The opening setup is as follows:

From left to right on the bottom and top rows, the chessmen are in the order of a rook, a knight, a minister, a guard, a king, a guard, a minister, a knight, and a rook. On the third rows, you see the cannons, and on the fourth row you see the pawns. Pieces at the bottom half are red.
