Apollo, my golden goes down about 4 ft to retrieve. He got into it with a Beaver while fetching a ball in a wide deep creek, went under to fight about 20 seconds. I thought he was a gonner. Tore him up a bit, costing a thousand emergency. That would be like you or I battling a porpoise under water. I pulled him to shore when he surfaced, but afraid to go deep he never was.

Great video TY!

Dogs lose some of their bearing UW...they rely more on touch and smell than anything. In a nutshell, UW scares the crap out of them. Witness in the weightlessness of water, they still try to run as if on land (dog paddle)- which makes this story even more remarkable.

Our UDT Gunny back in Nam had a chocolate lab that was a supposedly "diving dog." He would dive to about 1-2 feet under his head and then come up for air - it was more like getting his head wet than anything - it sure wasn't diving - retrieving yes, diving no.

Thats nothing new......
My labs do it all the time. Ducks, when wounded
dive under when they see the retriever coming.
Instead of wasting precious hunting time with
a "goose chase". Teach them to dive !

Keep at it, fetch in a small stream is a good start, some dogs are born swimmers, others have to learn and some just hate it. I'm sure the puppy is developing a relationship with you, maybe you go swimming too? Good luck:)

I did as well, didn't even bother to read it, as it seemed too silly to bother. I really do need to change my font preferences so I can read things a little better.
