WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake hit the northern part of Japan's main Honshu island on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

It said the quake, at a depth of 66.5 miles, was centered 40 miles east of Morioka, in northern Honshu.
