Hanna Malak adopted a special name for himself as a little boy - Officer John. Malak's first name means John in Arabic.

And he really wanted to be a police officer growing up. The San Mateo native was an energetic youth, always running around. That energy served him well over the years in athletics and particularly with community involvement. This weekend he will walk with the graduating class of Junipero Serra High School before heading to Menlo College this fall.

“This young man is a real winner in every respect,” said Admissions Director Randy Vogel.

Bay Area kids from 3 to 18 will roll for strikes with their local police and public safety officers from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 7 at the free 17th annual Kops and Kids Family Day.

This year, kids can bowl one free game every day after school starting May 1, and all summer long, at Serra, Palo Alto and Bel Mateo (San Mateo) bowling centers, which are the program's sponsors.

"Kid safety is the goal of this annual event," said Mike Leong, vice president of Bowling Management Group, which manages all Advertisement three bowling centers. "I am proud to be a part of the bowling community because we offer kids a safe place to enjoy a sport during their most vulnerable years."

Sometimes, the least glamorous aspects of a working park are the ones that visitors notice most when they're missing.

I still enjoy it. It's a thrill and still a lot of fun."
