McCain backs ending affirmative action

Presidential challenger John McCain said Sunday that he supports a proposed ballot initiative in his home state that would prohibit affirmative action policies from state and local governments. A decade ago, he called a similar effort "divisive."

Did McCain 'flip' on affirmative action measure?
Posted: 05:36 PM ET
From CNN's Josh Levs
"...Sen. John McCain said Sunday he supports an Arizona ballot initiative aimed at ending race- and gender-based preference programs... McCain's own campaign refused to say whether it stands by the candidate's announcement that he supports the ballot initiative.

In an interview broadcast on ABC's "This Week," host George Stephanopoulos asked McCain if he supports a referendum on the ballot in his home state "that would do away with affirmative action."

"Yes, I do," he responded. "I do not believe in quotas. But I have not seen the details of some of these proposals. But I've always opposed quotas."

Stephanopoulos asked, "But the one here in Arizona you support?"

"I support it, yes," replied McCain....

Obama told attendees to the Unity conference that he was "disappointed… that John McCain flipped and changed his position. I think in the past he had been opposed to these kinds of… initiatives as divisive. And I think he's right."..."

So the GOP thugs threatened to kneecap the man and he had to back off a little bit. The UN mandate will still expire in December. The GOP will be out of power in January. And then the Democrats can start an intelligent foreign policy.
Bush has still been forced out of his hole. The GOP has agreed to a withdrawal.
Attention you democRat Skidmark!!

As I recall, did you or did you not mention you are a member of moveon.org ? And, isn't moveon.org a key contributor to the Obama Campaign to screw America?

And isn't moveon.org the slugs who called General David Petraeus "General Betrayus" in a 10 page newspaper ad? Tell this forum the truth about Obama’s scumbag lowlife socialist contributors and that includes you.

Did candidate Obama denounce his key contributor’s stinking slanderous smear campaign against General David Petraeus or did he ignore it like he ignored the anti-American filth spewed by Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers, Louis Farrakhan, Father Phleger et al?

Perhaps you could list Obama's Military Service? I'll help you out with this one, it may be very difficult for you to admit you have nothing but poop between your ears...

Barack Hussein Obama's Military Service: "ZERO." Once again: "ZERO." And Once Again: "ZERO."

Please explain to this forum how the ZERO Military experience candidate Barack Obama could vote against the mission in Iraq and vote against the surge and now he wants to command the mission in Iraq...Explain it.

And after you're done explaining the above explain fully what makes Obama qualified to be president...And, spare the copy and paste platitudes and trinket promises.

There is much to criticize in your irrational ranting. Suffice to say here that if we left overall war decisions to the military minds you so admire, we'd probably have continuous wars for the next century. And you keep calling this one the "mission" in Iraq. It is the TRAVESTY in Iraq.

I have no dog in this hunt, not being a supporter of McCain, Obama, or moveon. But JohninLA, you're just attempting to change the subject here.

Did McCain flipflop on affirmative action? The answer is a simple yes or no, and then you can explain your answer.

But don't go trying to change the subject, John.

If McCain's against Quotas and/or Affirmative
Action, I could care less if he flipped on this
issue. He's got my vote.

Both candidates suck. Obama is scarier though due to the lack of a track record and his ties to racial hate mongers. Seriously now, if McCain had been going to a church where hatered of blacks was preached, he'd been driven out of the race.

This is hilarious...McCain is against affirmative action/quotas? He must believe in the old fashion way of getting ahead...the way he used...family pull.

Affirmative Action is a requirement to hire lazy, unqualified individuals that businesses cannot fire and they know this.

Don't forget the way he made his money. He dumped his disabled wife, mother of his three children, to marry a very rich heiress. In bald terms, he's a kept man.

He has never held a job outside of government.

I'd like to see an era where things like affirmative action weren't needed in this country. There are areas of this nation, particularly in the south, that still hire and fire based solely on the tint of one's skin.

In a perfect world, such a thing wouldn't be needed. More progressive states have learned to look past colors and textures, but there are some infantile minds out there who still can't.

I, personally, don't really care about affirmative action. I'm well qualified for whatever job for which I apply. I just think it's sad that there has to be a form of law put in place to keep people from being discriminatory.

as far as we have come with all our ups and downs I have to agree with McCain this historical law put in place to help the minority in areas of education and learning etc. is no longer valid, I am a minority in my home state however if I want to be president, why not? Obama was born here.

That is pretty much true there. It is ironic that one of these posters couched his opposition to affirmative action with the term "freedom"-the freedom to deny law abiding individuals the freedom to work where they choose(regardless of merit).Needless to say(regardless of ethical and legal matters), any businessman who sets out to alienate much of the public that they deal with (and risk ostracism and boycotts)is a really stupid businessman at that. That rule applies to just about any non illicit activity that there is.That racist mentality caters pretty much to the lowest common denominator and was pretty much the way the U.S. was run under Jim Crow. People often aren't angels and that is why such laws exist in the first place-to keep racist barbarians from acting on their own worst instincts in a nation that protects the rights of all individuals. Individuals don't have the "freedom" to scream fire in a movie theater any time they feel like it either-with freedoms come responsibilities and rights under the law.

Affirmative action should be abolished and all those who benefited from it in the past should be fired. Cheating is no way to get ahead.

I certainly wouldn't argue that affirmative action is no longer valid. When polls prove that large numbers of whites dislike(even hate) blacks, Asians, and hispanics. People often hire who they personally are most comfortable with and who they know(regardless of merit), and there are quite a few cases of such individuals who still discriminate of that basis alone(not really good behavior-especially considering that the U.S. is not homogenous). There are plenty of fair housing violations that prove that some act on their hatreds, regardless of the laws against it. These laws are necessary to keep bad people from violating civil rights.

In the Jim Crow era, that would certainly include such beneficiaries of unfairness and unequal opportunity as George W. Bush and John McCain (family connections and wealth go a long way-merit has nothing to do with it).

Jim Crow laws were great. You got your own bathroom and water fountain and got to sit in the back of the bus. Hell, I would kill to get my own bathroom and sit in the back of the bus. You had it made and blew it. Stupid N-words.
