Tournament rules:

  • A new GK tournament is started monthly, usually on the first Monday of the month. A minimum of 5 wins in any rated games is required to enter the GK tournament.
  • There are 4 sections in a tournament: Expert, Advanced, Intermediate and Casual chess. Any player can join the Expert section. Players with rating of 1700 and lower can join the Advanced section, 1500 and lower -- Intermediate section and 1300 and lower -- Casual section. This way anyone can try their luck against higher rated players, but higher rated players won't be able to dominate the lower sections. If your rating exceeds the limit of your section after the first round, you will be automatically moved to the next higher section. Rating limits are not enforced after the second round on.
  • All participants will be divided into groups of 4 or 5 players. Everyone will play two games (one as black and one as white) against everyone else in their group. 1 point is awarded for every win, ½ point for a draw and no points for a loss. Whoever gets the most points in every group will advance to the next round. In case of a tie, all players with the top score will advance to the next round. If the winner in a group was moved to the higher section due their rating, the runner-up will advance to the next round instead.
  • All tournament games except for the final round will be played with 2 days per move. The final round games will be 3 days per move. All tournament games are rated, i.e. they will affect your ratings/stats as any other game.
  • All games have to be completed in all groups in the same tournament section before the 2nd round can be started. Starting with the 3rd and subsequent rounds, a new round will be started as soon as the winners are determined in all groups in the same section (i.e. when the remaining games will not affect the top score positions regardless of their outcome).
  • An announcement will be sent via e-mail to all players advancing to a new round 7 days before it starts. Unless a vacation flag is set for your account, you will need to log in to GameKnot at least once before the new round starts or you will be considered withdrawn from the tournament. If a vacation flag is set for your account, all games in the new round will be automatically postponed for the same number of days.
  • Purposefully losing or tying tournament games, so that one or more players advance to the next round, will result in disqualification of all players involved from the tournament.
