At the end of the 10th round of the British Chess Championships there is a surprise challenger for the title. 21 year old Stewart Haslinger scored his 3rd straight win in beating Pentala Harikrishna and now joins IM RB Ramesh of India and GM Luke McShane of England on 7.5/10. He is set for one of the most remarkable performances in the history of the championship and has achieved a tournament rating performance in excess of 2600 when rated just 2310.

Haslinger's run has included being unbeaten against six Grandmasters and three International Masters and he has already produced a Grandmaster result. This was quite a feat considering he does not even hold the IM title yet.

Luke McShane has been leading since the beginning of the second week and he nearly made something out of an extra pawn against defending champion Joe Gallagher but his opponent's bishop pair proved adequate compensation. RB Ramesh has already scored a GM result and he defeated Jonathan Rowson with deft endgame play after the latter appeared to overreach having held the initiative earlier.
