GM Peter Wells should have taken the lead after five rounds of the Smith & Williamson British Chess Championships in Torquay. Wells was a pawn ahead with a won endgame but failed to convert this advantage. Wins on the lower boards for Jon Speelman and RB Ramesh and GM Dibyendu Barua means five players share the lead on 4/5.

Krisnan Sasikiran and Aaron Summerscale played an extremely sharp theoretical game. The Exchange Grunfeld saw white's pawn sacrifice matched with a counter sacrifice of the exchange. Summerscale opened up his own king in order to liberate a fianchettoed bishop. Black's counterplay prevented the white queen and rooks from attacking and after turning down a draw Sasikiran found the black queenside pawns coming down the board and offered a draw himself.

Defending champion Joe Gallagher survived a sacrificial onslaught from Chris Ward in the Sicilian Dragon as the game ended in a draw. Jon Speelman looked in great form as he despatched Indian IM Chandra Sandipan.

15 year old WGM Humpy Koneru held Pentala Harekrishna another of India's top to a draw. Ms Koneru won the British Women's title two years ago but this time around looks like a contender for the pounds ten thousand first prize.
