Malcolm Pein on the British Championships

Chess by Malcolm Pein of the Daily Telegraph

Malcolm Pein writes for the Daily Telegraph (telegraph.co.uk) you can read his chess columns along with those of Nigel Short and David Norwood at their new Chess Club (to read the columns you need to register which is free).

Round 2 Tuesday 22nd July 2003

There were a few quiet draws on the top boards in the second round of the Smith & Williamson British Chess Championship at Edinburgh. Lower down the accelerated pairings pitted some of the stronger players who failed to win their first game against lower rated opposition who did. Most of the games were decisive and won by the player with white.

Adam Hunt took his second Indian GM scalp in two games and is one of the leaders and England junior Rafe Martyn scored a splendid result and held top seed Vassilios Kotronias to a draw. After his fine win yesterday Scottish number one Jonathan Rowson had a farcical game against Indian IM Neelotpal Das. Rowson blundered a pawn and then shed more and more material for virtually no compensation. A rook ahead, Das found an ingenious way to avoid victory and the game ended in a draw.

Leaders: Hunt, Summerscale, Vujatovic (England), Harekrishna, Ghate, Ahmed (India) 2/2

At the Politiken Cup in Copenhagen Luke McShane tried a very dubious line of the Gruenfeld against Peter Heine Nielsen and was summarily despatched in round seven. Nielsen then lost to the Indian champion Krisnan Sasikiran who shares the lead with Russian GM Konstantin Sakaev on 7/8 going into the last round. McShane and Jon Speelman have 6/8.
