Malcolm Pein on the British Championships

Chess by Malcolm Pein of the Daily Telegraph

British Round 8 Tuesday 29th July 2003

The Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting, one of highlights of the Classical Chess calendar starts today in the Dortmund Theatre and runs until 10th August. The six player all play all provides a rare opportunity to see three of the world's top four players in action including the world champion Vladimir Kramnik who was less than impressive at his last outing at Linares although he was dogged by ill health throughout.

Kramnik's battles against Hungarian Peter Leko will be of particular interest because the pair are supposed to be playing for the world championship title but after the demise of the former rights holders Einstein Group PLC there is no sign of that match taking place. However if it is to be organised there should be an announcement during Dortmund. World number three Vishy Anand needs a good performance after his failure at Linares in February when Peter Leko was the surprise winner. Unfortunately Garry Kasparov is not playing. The field is completed by: The winner of the Aeroflot Open the Moldovan GM Viktor Bologan, Germany's youngest GM Arkadi Naiditsch aged seventeen from Dortmund and the teenage prodigy Teimour Radjabov aged fifteen from Azerbaijan. The time control will be 40 moves for 2 hours , 20 moves for 1 hour , then 15 min+30 sec. per move for the rest.

The Indian GMs Abhijit Kunte and Pentyla Harikrishan took the lead of the Smith & Williamson British Chess Championship in the eighth round. Kunte defeated overnight leader GM Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh and Harikrishna defeated his compatriot WGM Subbaraman Vijayalaskshmi who must be well set to score a IM result. The leaders have 6.5/8 the only British player in touch is GM Peter Wells on 6/8.
