Hastings Premier

Chess by Malcolm Pein of the Daily Telegraph

Malcolm Pein writes for the Daily Telegraph (telegraph.co.uk) you can read his chess columns along with those of Nigel Short and David Norwood at their new Chess Club (to read the columns you need to register which is free).

Round 3 30th December 2003

Vasilios Kotronias of Cyprus took the lead away from Mark Hebden in the third round of the Hastings Premier being held at the Horntye Sports Centre. Kotronias checkmated the Russian Alexander Cherniaev while Hebden was comprehensively beaten by back marker Danny Gormally. Kotronias has 2.5/3 with Hebden sharing second place on 2/3 with last year's winner Peter Heine Nielsen of Denmark and Russian Vladimir Epishin

Playing white, Gormally produced a very strong new move in the opening that pretty well refuted one of Hebden's favourite lines in the Ruy Lopez. The idea has been seen before in a similar position but was overlooked because White played it so badly. Gormally gave up a rook for bishop and pawn and a dominating centre. Hebden's pieces became short of squares and in desperation he sacrificed a piece to create some tactical tricks but Gormally kept control and won convincingly.

Kotronias used a plan in the Sicilian Defence that has been used by world champion Vladimir Kramnik and built up a huge kingside attack in the style of the King's Indian Defence that forced mate.

Visitors to the congress can compete in events for all strengths and there is daily commentary on the Premier games from GM Chris Ward. The tournament continues until January 5th

Round three results:

Gormally 1-0 Hebden, Ruy Lopez, 42 moves;

Nielsen 1-0 Lahno, English Opening, 46;

A couple of lines indicate Black's problems in the face of the white pawn mass, note how the Ne6 has no support and is driven out of play so much so that White's material deficit in an endgame is more than compensated for.
