Malcolm Pein on Round 13 of Linares

Round 13 March 4, 2004

Another astonishing lapse from the world number one Garry Kasparov saw him miss his third clear win of the tournament and enabled world champion Vladimir Kramnik to retain a half point lead going into the fourteenth and final round at Linares. The three leading players; Kramnik. Kasparov and Peter Leko are all black in their last game.

It was another tragedy for Kasparov who has lacked his usual sharpness when the win is in sight. He played a beautiful attack in the Ruy Lopez which was surely to be crowned in a hail of sacrifices but in a desperate race against the clock for both players Kasparov missed what for him should have been a simple idea and had to force perpetual check instead. See below for the analysis.

The sixteen year old prodigy Teimour Radjabov scored his second win in a row to finish the tournament on 6/12, the youngster outplayed Alexei Shirov for much of the game but nearly let the advantage slip in the time scramble. Shirov managed to reach an endgame a rook for bishop down but then put up incredible resistance before he was forced resign on move 78 after his opponent had manoeuvred cleverly to pick up a couple of pawns. Radjabov sits out the last round.

Round thirteen results

Kasparov draw Topalov, Ruy Lopez Anti Marshall 8.a4, 38;
Leko draw Vallejo, Sicilian Najdorf 6.Be3, 19;
Radjabov 1-0 Shirov, Gruenfeld Defence 4.Bg5, 78;
Rest day: Kramnik

Scores: 1 Kramnik (Russia) 6.5/11; 2-3 Leko (Hungary), Kasparov (Russia) 6/11; 4 Radjabov (Azerbaijan) 6/12; 5 Topalov (Bulgaria) 5.5/11; 6-7 Shirov (Spain), Vallejo Pons (Spain) 4.5/11;

One interesting coincidence about the last round is that all the players of the white pieces lost to their opponents with black earlier in the tournament.

Last round: Vallejo - Kasparov; Topalov - Kramnik; Shirov - Leko.
