Malcolm Pein on rounds 6 and 7

Round 6

It was siesta time at Morelia where the sixth round was a rather poor show coming as it did after a rest day. The leader Magnus Carlsen repeated moves against Peter Leko in the opening while Alexander Morozevich swiftly shared the point with Peter Svidler. Both Leko and Svidler have drawn all six games so far. The game between Levon Aronian and world number one Veselin Topalov rapidly reached a drawn position a result which leaves Topalov bottom of the table on 2/6 or ‘minus 2’. It was left to the relative old timers Vishy Anand and Vasily Ivanchuk to slug it out in the only game to get to the third hour but when Ivanchuk held an edge his deficit on the clock convinced him a draw was the safest course.

Round 7

Vishy Anand leaves for Spain in the joint lead of the Linares tournament after a hard fought victory over Peter Leko who missed his chance for advantage and then was gradually outplayed. After the siesta in round six it was more of a fiesta in round seven as three of the four games finished decisively and even the draw between Peter Svidler and Magnus Carlsen was quite tense for a while.

Vasily Ivanchuk was back to his best defeating Levon Aronian in the latter’s favourite line of the Queen’s Gambit in which he has been invincible of late. Ivanchuk exchanged pieces into a slightly favourable endgame in which Aronian’s remaining bishop was passively placed, obstructed by an isolated pawn. Such positions are usually tenable but Aronian did not play with the requisite accuracy and soon lost a pawn.

The game between Veselin Topalov and Alexander Morozevich was enlivened by the Russian’s original play in the opening. A tactical melee ensued with both kings vulnerable. Morozevich held the balance despite dispensing with the services of his queen’s rook throughout. In mutual time trouble he made the final error.

Ivanchuk wants to avoid the exchange of all four rooks 17...Rfc8 [17...Rxc1+ 18.Rxc1 Rc8 was safer although White has the edge after an exchange of rooks or 19.Rb1 Kf8 20.Nd4] 18.Rd1!!
