Mark Crowther comments: The 2007 edition of the Corus tournament in Wijk aan Zee finished in a three way tie between Levon Aronian, Veselin Topalov and Teimour Radjabov.

Veselin Topalov had black against Teimour Radjabov. Photo © Michiel Abeln.

Radjabov and Topalov followed a key game from the Kramnik - Topalov World title match in Elista where Topalov had blundered. Radjabov had the possiblilty of an exchange sacrifice which may have led to favourable play for him, instead he allowed a repetition and a share of first place.

This draw allowed Levon Aronian to catch the pair by beating Sergei Tiviakov. Tiviakov has played incredibly solidly throughout the event but went for a nebulous rook sacrifice for which he probably had enough compensation but couldn't follow through properly. In the end he was a rook down.

Part 2

Vladimir Kramnik demolished Loek van Wely in the final round on the white side of a semi-slav. Kramnik set up a stonewall attack and van Wely seemed to be in big trouble early. Then Kramnik opened up the position for a comfortable winning attack against the King. This win took Kramnik to within half a point of the leaders

Viswanathan Anand couldn't break through against David Navara's Ruy Lopez and the game was agreed drawn in 27 moves.

Peter Svidler's up and down tournament finished on a down when his improvement to theory seemed to be not very good and certainly by move 19 he was already in extremely serious trouble. He never looked like saving the game after that.

The final two games to finish were Ponomariov against Motylev and the basement battle Carlsen against Shirov. Both games finished in draws after well balanced play although Carlsen at least was disappointed not to win his game.

Pavel Eljanov took clear first in a hotly contested B group and qualifies for the A group. Michal Krasenkow overtook Ian Nepomniachtchi in the C Group. 16 year old Nepomniachtchi who had led throughout but who went down to a terrible loss in the final round, his only one of the event.
