Featured Game #9:

Smoke and Mirrors

If it takes you under a minute to find the win in the position diagrammed below, you may think I took it easy this month, presenting a short game with a simple example of waiting for the mating piece. Heh, boy are you wrong. This position isn't where the game ends, it's where it begins. It's at this point that Gnejs executes an escape worthy of Houdini to keep the game alive. (Give yourself extra credit if you can figure out the trap Gnejs set to prolong the game.)

Despite surviving this crisis, Gnejs and pminear still face major difficulties, as JKiller and jtp doggedly hang onto a time advantage of a few seconds - a small time advantage to be sure, but a few seconds are all that remain on Gnejs' clock. Can JKiller and jtp maintain their time advantage to carry the day? Can pminear and Gnejs orchestrate a second Houdini-like escape? The game answers all...

pminear 02:41

Gnejs 02:33*

JKiller 02:44*
