Black tried hard to win and almost made it, but the draw was agreed when both sides were very short of time in time trouble.

Round Nine, Board One:

Bronstein once gave some famous advice, paraphrased as follows: "Never win an event with a perfect score; people will say it was a weak event. Instead, give up one draw. This will make your performance look much more impressive." Wu Shaobin already has won the tournament (or, at the very least, a share of it) with one round to go after this quick draw against his 2229-rated opponent.

Round Eight, Board One:
White Wu Shaobin Black Chua Han Wei

With a 500 Elo points difference in ratings it is hardly surprising that Black was unable to survive his Grandmaster opponent. For a while it appeared as though Black might be able to develop some counterplay on the K-side but it was purely illusory - Wu had the game completely under control at all times and only had to wait for Black to blunder away material.

Round Seven, Board One:
White Goh Weiming Black Wu Shaobin
1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. f3 e6 4. Nc3 Bb4 5. e5 c5 6. a3 Bxc3 7. bxc2 Ne7 8. f4 Qc7 9. Nf3 Nc6 10. a4 b6 11. Bd3 Bd7 12. O-O Na5 13. Qe1 c4 14. Be2 h5 15. Ba3 Nf5 16. Nh4 Ne3 17. Bd6 Qb7 18. Qg3 Nxf1 19. White's insipid 3rd move against the Caro Kann Defence, 3 f2-f3, led to a French Defence position in which the f3 square is needed for other purposes. In the game, after 7...Ng8-e7, White would like to play Ng1-f3 or Qd1-g4 (the normal moves in the Winawer Variation of the French), but in this case neither move is legal. Therefore White had to give back a tempo by playing 8 f3-f4 (Black had sacrificed a tempo earlier by playing ...c7-c6 followed by ...c6-c5). But after 8 f3-f4 White was in an inferior variation of the Winawer, which allowed Black to play a number of thematic moves on the Q-side without having to worry about White's plans on the K-side.

Suddenly Black's knight invaded the white position to devastating effect.
