An 18-year-old woman was killed yesterday when the car she was driving and a tractor-trailer collided on U.S. 23 in Sylvania Township, authorities said.
Amelia Smith, of Lincoln Park, Mich., was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers at the Ohio Highway Patrol's Toledo post said.
Ms. Smith was southbound on U.S. 23 near the I-475 junction about 10:45 a.m. when she lost control and crossed the median into the path of the northbound semi, driven by Gregory E. Gibson, 51, of Seneca County's Clinton Township. Mr. Gibson was not hurt. The northbound left lane of I-475/U.S. 23 was closed for three hours.
An unrelated accident closed the nearby Central Avenue entrance ramp to southbound I-475 for several hours later yesterday when another tractor-trailer overturned there. Authorities had to unload 36,000 pounds of fiber-glass material before righting the truck, then reload it.
The driver, Rimantas Galvydis, 32 of Bloomingdale, Ill., was treated for minor injuries at St. Luke's Hospital, Maumee, troopers said. Permanent Link READER COMMENTS
