Toledo police early Thursday arrested two men in the shooting death the day before of a clerk in a gas station on Dorr Street.
Police have arrested Anthony Belton, 22, the suspected gunman, and Dymon Bolton, 18, believed to have driven the getaway car.
The statements they made to authorities while being interviewed led to their arrests and charges, police said.
Mr. Belton was charged with aggravated murder and aggravated robbery, and Mr. Bolton was charged with aggravated robbery. A warrant has also been issued for Tony Bivens, 17, who is wanted for aggravated robbery.
Officers said they identified the car used to flee after the robbery and traced the vehicle to a home on Ranch Drive where the two suspects were arrested in the backyard. The arrest site is not that far from where the shooting occurred.
The weapon used in the crime has been recovered.
Mayor Carty Finkbeiner and several police command officers held a press conference Thursday morning in Government Center addressing the death of Matthew Dugan, 34. The victim’s sister, Molly Dugan, also was present.
"What happened yesterday is absolutely unexplainable, unforgiveable," Mr. Finkbeiner said.
Deputy Chief Don Kenney said Mr. Belton, who is accused of shooting Mr. Dugan in the back of the head, had been stopped by police Tuesday for suspicious activity.
He was issued a summons to appear in court for two misdemeanor warrants; one for loitering and another for failure to register dogs, Toledo Municipal Court records show.
Deputy Chief Kenney said officers, who regularly patrol that West Toledo area, recognized Mr. Belton from the surveillance camera footage released Wednesday.
Molly Dugan briefly spoke, thanking police officers for their hard work and dedication in finding her brother’s killer.
"There are no words to thank them enough," she said. "They were relentless in their pursuit."
Mr. Dugan was shot early Wednesday after he gave the money in the cash register to the gunman and then turned away from him.
When asked by The Blade why he shot the clerk, Mr. Belton remained silent and shrugged his shoulders. The exchange occurred about 9 a.m. Thursday as Mr. Belton and Mr. Bolton were being escorted by police at the downtown police station. Permanent Link
