Learn more about The Blade's Newspapers in Education (NIE) program

What is the Newspaper in Education program?
Educators have long recognized the newspaper as a teaching tool that works in classrooms. Newspapers have responded with programs that provide educational services to schools. For more than 20 years, The Blade’s Newspaper in Education Program has provided valuable services to school throughout northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.

The newspaper is used effectively across the curriculum, in all classrooms, kindergarten to adult level.

How do educators use the newspaper in the classroom?

Educators determine what needs to be accomplished by using the newspaper in the classroom. Obviously, it can be used for its content and to keep up on current events. Students are able to access a wealth of information daily – from who won the election to the latest scientific discovery., to keep up on current events. Students may read the newspaper to gather information about current health and environmental issues? Some educators use it to study the editorial pages for fact and opinion.

The newspaper is also used for skills application. That is, to reinforce skills that students are expected to master. An example of this is to have students use the weather page to compute the difference between high and low temperatures for cities listed, then locate the cities on a world map (math and social studies skills).

How often do schools request newspaper delivery?

This decision should be based will also depend on how it is to incorporatedbe incorporated in to the curriculum. Will students need to access newspapers everyday for the school year, or a semester? Or will newspaper delivery one day a week do the job? Some of our programs require specific delivery days. For example, if you use the Pigskin Geography Program, you’ll order Monday newspapers from September through December.

To develop a newspaper reading “habit”, consistent weekly or daily delivery is recommended.

When making plans for delivery, educators consider these daily Blade features:

Monday
+ Science and Health pages are in the Living section

Tuesday
+ Kids Scoop page
+ Food and Nutrition in the Living section

Thursday
+ Current Events Quiz

Everyday
+ International, national, state and local news, sports, comics, business, weather, comics

Why use the newspaper in the classroom?

+ Using the newspaper helps with practical application of skills.
+ Using the newspaper on a regular basis has been shown to improve test scores.
+ Using the newspaper promotes positive attitudes toward reading.
+ It makes every lesson a current events lesson.
