[edit] History

[edit] Founding

IIMC was established in November 1961, in collaboration with the MIT Sloan School of Management, the government of West Bengal, the Ford Foundation and Indian industry. During its initial years, several prominent faculty formed part of its nucleus, including Paul Samuelson, Jagdish Sheth, J. K. Sengupta, among others.

[edit] Evolution

The institute started functioning from a new campus in Joka, with the admission of the thirteenth batch. As of 2006, forty one batches have graduated out of this institute.

Over the years, IIMC has grown into a mature institution with a global reputation, imparting high quality management education. It has been playing a pioneering role in professionalizing Indian management through its post graduate and doctoral level programs, executive training programs, and research and consulting activities.

The vision of the institute is to emerge as an international center of excellence in all facets of management education, rooted in Indian ethos and societal values. Over the past four decades, IIMC has developed into one of Asia's finest business schools. Its strong ties with industry make it an effective institution for the promotion of professional management practices in Indian organizations. Today, IIMC attracts some of the best talent in India - a melting pot of academia, industry and research.

[edit] Academic Programs

The main thrust of the academic programs is to help the student imbibe a sense of strategic outlook to management problems. The emphasis therefore, is on management as an integrated process, and requires the students to develop a global view of the economic, technological, cultural and political environment of business.

The institute offers three major diploma programs:

  • Fellow Program (FP) in Management and Related Disciplines
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM)
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Aided Management (PGDCM)
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM)

[edit] Fellow Program (FP)

The FP Programme offers an opportunity for full-time advanced study and Research at the Doctoral Level in management and related areas. The aim is to produce best learned and trained faculty, consultants and researchers in various offered domains. The selection is on the basis of the candidate's performance in the Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by the [Indian Institutes of Management] a very small list of candidates is short-listed for each discipline. The research interest of the candidate is also a criteria to choose suitable candidates for next rounds from the shortlist. They then undergo rounds of department and FP committee interviews. On the basis of the overall satisfaction of the department faculty and the FP committee some or none of the students are finally selected. The FP programme at IIMC is one the most reputed in Country for its rigour, quality and research contributions.

[edit] Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM)

The PGDM Program is designed to meet the challenges of rapid changes in our society. Students are continually exposed to scenarios that demand structuring of unstructured problems and proposing solutions to complex situations. To gain admission to this program, candidates (except for those admitted under the small non-resident Indian quota) must appear in the nationwide Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management. Based on their performance in CAT, a small list of candidates is short-listed. They then undergo rounds of group discussion and personal interview. Only a minority of the candidates part of the original short-list are finally selected.

[edit] Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Aided Management (PGDCM)

In 1994, the two-year full-time PGDCM program was started. This program fulfils the demand for global business managers, by reorienting management education to keep pace with the changing needs of the world. It is a distinctive program with special emphasis on Information Technology (IT) and its application to business. The criteria for admission are the same as that of the PGDM program, except that candidates short-listed based on CAT scores must also take an aptitude test in mathematics.

[edit] Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM)

The PGDBM program is a three year long program meant for working professionals. It was launched in 1994 to offer working executives the opportunity to gain insights into various facets of management. With the quick growth of the Information Technology industry in Kolkata, a substantial number of students on the rolls for this program are computer software professionals with a high level of industry experience. This program also attracts talent from a wide range of other sectors including banking, telecommunication, insurance, engineering, agro-based, public sector, government, NGO and military. Students are admitted to this course based on their CAT score and a personal interview. To gain admission, a candidate must have a minimum of two years of full time paid work experience in a managerial or supervisory role. As of 2006, 10 batches of students have graduated under this program.

[edit] Best Things About IIM Calcutta

[edit] The Great Lakes

There are seven lakes on the campus. Every one of them larger than the previous. One always sees atleast one lake irrespective of where he/she is in the campus. Provides the twin advantage of cooling the air and having an option to swim anytime, anywhere (though it is both prohibited and not advisable). The institute practises pisciculture in the lakes and there is a large catch of fish that goes out every week. There is one boat that keps changing lakes and is the love of every IIM Calcutta student's life.

[edit] The Howrah Bridge

The Howrah Bridge is a small scale replica of the actual Howrah Bridge over the Hoogly. Built over one of the seven lakes, it has the most amazing view of the sunrise in the campus. Almost every morning at 4, there are students here watching the sun rise or listening to the birds chirping or just enjoying the mist and dew after their all night studying binge.
