[edit] History

[edit] Founding

The institute was established in November 1961 in collaboration with the MIT Sloan School of Management, the government of West Bengal, the Ford Foundation and Indian industry and is therefore the first IIM in the country. During its initial years, several prominent faculty formed part of its nucleus, including Paul Samuelson, Jagdish Sheth, J. K. Sengupta, among others .

[edit] Campus

The foundation stone of the Joka campus was laid by Sri Morarji Desai, the then Dy. Prime Minister of India on Dec 15, 1968. The Institute moved to its present campus in 1975. The institute is located in its own sprawling 135 acres (0.5 km2) campus in Joka, away from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis. IIM Calcutta has one of the most breath-takingly beautiful academic campuses in the country - spotted with scenic locales, seven lakes, exotic birds, and a miniature Howrah Bridge.

[edit] Library

The institute’s Bidhan Chandra Roy library was started initially with a liberal Ford foundation grant, and over the last 36 years has grown into a major learning resource center in South Asia. Housing over 1,50,000 volumes, this imposing repository of knowledge is housed in a spacious building between the Students' Hostels and the Academic Block, overlooking the blue lakes at its eastern and northern sides. It also subscribes to several hundred journals and provides access to an exhaustive collection of electronic databases which provide information about global and Indian industry.

[edit] Teaching Block

The main Academic Block has four spacious lecture halls and several classrooms. The lecture halls and classrooms are Air-conditioned and are equipped with state-of-the-art Audio-visual facilities. The academic block is located amidst lush green lawns, which create an inspiring ambience for the learning process. The New Teaching Block has additional air-conditioned, multimedia enabled lecture halls. The Placement Cell is also located in the NTB.

[edit] Auditorium

IIM Calcutta's auditorium is the best among those on any academic campus in the country. This world-class facility seats 750 and was built at a cost of over Rs 9 crores. In addition to air-conditioning, it is also equipped with an ultra modern , professional level light and sound system. The Audi, as it is called, hosts all the major events on the IIM C campus - from the Convocation and Carpe-Diem to visits by eminent personalities like Kapil Dev or Indra Nooyi.

[edit] Hostels

The campus has four hostels that provide single room accommodation to students with modern amenities and recreation facilities. All the hostels have their own coffee shops, canteens, photocopy units and printer rooms. Every room has its own network connection, which enables fast and round-the-clock Internet access. The hostels also have intercom facility in all the wings. For the visitors, the institute provides guest-rooms. To take care of the married students’ needs, the institute has provided separate accommodation facilities for them.

[edit] Tata Hall

The Tata Hall provides accommodation to executives coming for Management Development Programmes. It consists of 56 residential rooms, four suites and three conference rooms. There is a plush dining hall, which caters to the occupants of Tata Hall. The suites present are double rooms while the other rooms provide single accommodation. Amenities like Phone, Fax, TV and Internet access are available here.

[edit] Computing facilities

The institute has always attached special importance to the use of information technology by the academic community. The institute deploys a network of around 1000 PCs, 4 digital Alpha servers, one IBM RS-6000 server and seven Novell file servers. Through a 2 Mbit/s and 64 kbit/s radio link with VSNL users get unlimited access to the Internet. A host of electronic databases like Bloomberg, Prowess and Capitaline providing information on the global and Indian corporate world are also accessible likewise. IIM C was the first management institute in the country to truly realize the potential of IT in education and create a truly wired campus.

[edit] Management Center for Human Values

The Management Center for Human Values is the crystallization of two decades of aspirations and effort to bring to the members of human organizations and institutions - in India and abroad - contemporary adaptations of the perennial corpus of Indian psycho-philosophical wisdom. It has taken up the mission of integrating the soft and subtle dimension of human values with the mainstream of skill-dominated management education. The center is located in a serene part of the campus and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. Its striking conical buildings are architectural masterpieces on the outside and quite sanctums of learning and contemplation on the inside.

[edit] Other features of IIM Calcutta

[edit] The Great Lakes

There are seven lakes on the campus, every one of them larger than the previous. One always sees at least one lake irrespective of where he/she is in the campus. Provides the twin advantage of cooling the air and fishing. The institute practises pisciculture in the lakes and there is a large catch of fish that goes out every week. There is one boat that keeps changing lakes and is the love of every IIM Calcutta student's life.

[edit] The Howrah Bridge

The Howrah Bridge is a small scale replica of the actual Howrah Bridge over the Hoogly. Built over one of the seven lakes, it has the most amazing view of the sunrise in the campus. Almost every morning at 4, there are students here watching the sun rise or listening to the birds chirping or just enjoying the mist and dew after their all night studying binge.

[edit] Night Canteen

Located in each of the four hostels, these are the places where the 'real' academic discussions happen. Over a game of table tennis and a cup of hot tea along with aloo paratha, students go into the wee hours of the morning discussing the last class, the next company and the latest movie on the LAN. This is the place where most of activity happens - day and night.

[edit] Internet Solutions Group (ISG)

The IIM Calcutta website is entirely conceptualized, designed and managed by students of the Internet Solutions Group. The entire community gets to know what is happening on campus - project assignments or parties, contest winners or a birthday - through the message boards, any time of the day. The IIM Calcutta website has message boards, courses section, internal email and a knowledge section in addition to other information.
