[edit] Controversy

However, it should be noted that the claim of IISWBM being the first management institute in India is disputed as the Xavier's Labour Relations Institute XLRI [1] was established in 1949 at Jamshedpur by the Jesuit Society. Similarly Sir Dorabji Tata School of Social Work, Bombay was founded in 1936.

Proponents have argued that XLRI Jamshedpur and similarly Sir Dorabji Tata School of Social Work, Bombay offered courses in Labour Relations and Social Work respectively; and hence their claim to be the first business school is not valid. In this context, it must be mentioned that IISWBM also did not offer a course in Business Management till about 1968. The first course on offer was the Diploma in Social Welfare (DSW) and it was offered regularly till 2003 whence due to declining popularity of the course it was stopped and a new course Masters in Human Resource Management (MHRM) was introduced in it's place
