National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Delhi was established in 1986 under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. The main motive behind the idea of this Institute was to fulfill the long-felt needs of the export-oriented garment industry to train manpower in fashion design, garment manufacturing technology and apparel marketing and merchandising. NIFT is one of the leading fashion schools of India. It is the founder member of "Fashion school foundation of world", which comprises 23 fashion schools worldwide. Many of the leading designers of India are NIFT alumni. NIFT has been empowered by an act of parliament to grant its own degrees.

Outside Delhi, NIFT has centers at Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore and Raebareli. Three more centres at Shillong, Bhopal and Patna are going to be functional very soon.
