"Union finance minister P. Chidambaram announced in New Delhi on Thursday that Pune is among six cities upgraded to ‘A’ status."

This will entitle all central government employees to higher house rent and city compensatory allowances. There are about 1.5 lakh central government employees working in the city, a majority of whom are engaged with defence laboratories and finance departments. The other ‘B-1’ cities upgraded to ‘A’ status are Nagpur, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kanpur and Surat. Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata are placed top in the classification with ‘A-1’ status.

Therefore re-classification of "large cities of India" required

• thanks for the comment. I think the confusion is showing up because of the fact that the template is named largest cities of india while it is titled metropolitan cities of india. If you want to include pune you can create a largest cities of india template and put in all the cities mentioned in your comment in it. I will rename this template metropolitan cities of india. We cannot arbitrarily include pune and leave out the other cities. You can start a discussion on this in Wikipedia_talk:Notice_board_for_India-related_topics and get a consensus on which cities should be included in the largest cities of india template. kaal 23:05, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Bangalore is not yet a metro (though it may qualify, just as Hyderabad) and hence I am removing it. --Gurubrahma 09:21, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi Gurubrahma, Bangalore was upgraded to A-1 status, the same as Delhi, Chennai, Kolkota and Mumbai in 2004. Here is the link [1]. You are right, Hyderabad's status is still in the pipeline, as noted here [2], although it should be noted that it is still an A-status city. AreJay 17:16, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Just as an addendum to my earlier comment, this NCERT textbook exerpt classifies any city with a population of over 1 million as a "metropolitan city" [3]. This brings the count to 423 metropolitan Indian cities! Clearly, the definition of a metropolitan city is not what it used to be in the past, when there were only 4 recognized metropolitan cities. This is not surprising considering the tremendous growth of Indian cities this past decade. The excerpt goes on to state however, that there are six mega cities, with a population of over 5 million. Perhaps the term "metropolitan city" is obsolete or alludes to a different context now. We should change this template to reflect the 6 mega cities, which would include Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkota, Chennai, Banagalore and Hyderabad. AreJay 17:47, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Why Ahmedabad and hydrabad loose out;

they are smaller and are yet to cross 4 Million mark.

This template should list only the metropolitan cities of India. The Census Commission recognises cities with a population above 4 million as a metropolitan city. (See mega cities). For the list of Indian cities that qualify, see World Gazeeter =Nichalp «Talk»= 05:14, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

The definition per the article is vague. It first talks of the Ahmedabad urban agglomeration, saying that it has qualified to be declared a "metro city" because its population is 4.5 million. Then it talks about the city of Ahmedabad saying it failed to qualify as a "mega city" because its population was under 4 million. Are the terms "mega city" and "metro city" different? One seems to deal with the urban agglomeration while the other deals with the city corporation area, although both have a minimum requirement of 4 million. AreJay 22:04, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

A city in India is classified into categories according to the total population under one local governing body, whereas urban agglomerations includes more than one local governing body. So which city should be classified as Metropolitan city solely depends upon the population governed by the Municipal Corporation alone, leave aside other governing bodies like cantonment board, municipal council, notified area committee etc that may be a part of urban agglomeration. From this it is clear that only those cities should be enlisted as Metropoliton cities that have a population of over 4 million under one local governing body--Rohit Saxena 20:33, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Bangalore and Hyderabad are not yet announced as Metros.

Area has nothing to do with the categorization of a city as "metropolitan". Neither does the HRA classification of A/A-1. It's the population of the city that ultimately matters. AreJay 14:35, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Please see this discussion. I think we should rename this template to Mega cities of India. I checked a few Indian government websites. The most popular version is that a metropolitan city is 1 million-plus city and a mega-city is a 4 million-plus city. The seven mega cities are Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai. References can be found in the dicussion link. Please comment.
