Cancer Is Biggest Killer In Brunei
By Azlan Othman

Bandar Seri Begawan - If statistics highlighting the top five causes of deaths in Brunei are taken into serious account, it would be warning for Bruneians to change their lifestyle immediately. They would ideally stop smoking, avoid fatty food, plan a regular exercise schedule and visit health care professionals for a check up to minimise personal risk.

The biggest killer is Cancer, topping the leading cause of death for three consecutive years (2004-2006) averaging around 217 patients followed by heart diseases (including acute rheumatic fever) with around 176 patients and diabetes mellitus with an average of 104 patients, trailing behind.

This was highlighted at the World Heart Day exhibition currently held at the Mall, Gadong. Trailing in the fourth leading causes of death is cerebrovascular disease with around 81 patients annually followed by bronchitis, chronic and unspecified emphysema and asthma with 50 patients.

As for cardiovascular disease, ischemic heart diseases topped the chart of complications for three consecutive years, followed by cerebrovascular diseases. Male patients led the statistics of deaths for both complications."

forms of heart diseases became third leading cause of death in this cardiovascular disease category.

It is up to the individual to follow the prescribed advice, change habits, practise healthy life style and diet for the better and to take medicine regularly.

As the Minister of Health pointed out on Thursday during the World Heart Day launch, "Despite the medical and therapeutic advances we make, the fundamental message still remains, that a major reduction in deaths and disability from diseases will come from prevention, not cure; basically, through people-topeople action and education."

"We are still a long way from accepting total responsibility for our own health, especially with health care being almost at no cost to individuals, at the end of the day, whether one enjoys good health or suffers, depends on what we do with our own life."

"But we would like to see concern for one's own health remaining an important agenda in one's own life. And we hope we can do this by educating the public."    -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
