TITLE: Making Globes AUTHOR: Jacqueline R. Doubek, Laughlin School, Nevada GRADE LEVEL: 5 PURPOSE: The purpose of this lesson is to introduce the students to the world map and globes. OVERVIEW: The students have studied the five themes of geography. They have made maps of our town and have done several activites with the globe. INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: 1. To understand the placement of the continents on the globe. PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: 1. The student will make a paper-mache round figure. 2. The students will transform the paper-mache figure into a replica of a globe. RESOURCES/MATERIALS: Newspaper - lots of it Balloons - enough for each member of your class 10 lbs. of flour (this will do 31 globes) Pail - this is to mix flour and water Green and Blue temper paint Paint-brushes Felt-tip marker (fine point and black work the best) ___________________________________________________ INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES: Day 1: Tear strips of newspaper in one inch strips. Day 2: Get balloons and have each student inflate one. Cover desks with newspaper. Distribute strips of paper Mix flour and water to a paste consistancy and put in pans. Give each two students a pan with the flour and water paste. Dip strips of paper in pans and wrap around balloon. Students will need to wrap balloons at least four times. Put finished globes on clean newspaper and let dry overnight. Day 3: Pop balloon and remove. Take a felt-tip marker and draw in the lines where the continents would be located. Day 4: Cover desks with newspaper. Mix green temper paint and put in little cups. Give each student a paint brush and cup of green paint. Each student should paint the continents green. Let dry overnight. Day 5: Cover desks with newspaper. Mix blue temper paint and put in little cups. Give each student a paint brush and cup of blue paint. Each student should paint the oceans blue. Let dry overnight. Day 6: You will need felt tip markers, maps that show the continents and the dry globes. Each student will label each continent and ocean.
